Time for new computer ... HELP!

Firstly ... HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY :ernae:

It's time for an upgrade of my PC. Not that my current system isn't any good and it runs CFS3 very well indeed. But some other newer games barely work at all (including the kids Christmas prezzies). I have looked around the net and it appears that the best systems around go something like this:

Antec P-182 Case
Asus P6T Deluxe mobo
Core i7 3.2 Ghz 965 processor
4 gig ram
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 or NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2
Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro
Usual DVD RW etc etc

Now my biggest question is not if or how well it will run current games but more importantly, can this system run CFS3 ... I guess I'm asking if it's backwards compatible if you know what I mean. Oh yes I forgot to mention I'll run Windows XP pro on this new system if I end up getting it. So give me opinions, is there anybody out there running this kind of rig now??

I would have thought it will, especially if you use XP Pro; although this is being written on a Dell Inspiron/Vista system (not mine) and CFS3 runs at 30-60fps without a dedicated video card.... or a joystick :banghead: .... or sound :banghead: .
Stick with nVidia for a graphics card if you want to see all the effects properly, especially the aircraft specular textures.

The thing that concerned me most is that I know there were fixes for running dual core but will this processor cause problems in a similar way. I also heard that Windows XP pro has an issue running such high levels (or amounts) of RAM .... does anybody know what I'm talking about? I'll leave the explanations to the experts, but it is still a serious question ...:isadizzy:

XP supports 3 1/2 Gb max. If you want to utilize more, you need Vista. My mobo supports 32Gb mem but it's useless to install that much since I'm running XP. Also SP3 for XP is supposed to correct the problem with multi core processors.

Hmmm I was just looking up the maximum RAM use for windows and there is an article stating that for Windows XP 32 bit the max is 4gig but for Windows 64 bit its 128 gig ... does that sound about right?
If so, are there issues running CFS3 with a 64 bit system??

I have also had a quick look at what some favorite games are like running on either Win XP (64 bit) and Vista .... it appears (according to one web site), that there are alot of games that will not run or if they do it's with a lot of issues. Call of duty, Farcry 1 + 2, Crysis, Doom and of course CFS3 all apparently have problems. Is this a common thing with the 64 bit systems? Is it compounding issues further with the problems with changing to Vista? :isadizzy:

:kilroy:Ozymail, you may or may not know this by now, but you can't play CFS3 in online Multiplayer with Vista. Period. Only OFF can be played thusly, it's been said.:d

Yeah I had read that as I was trolling through online. That's not a problem as I don't play multiplayer on any of the games. Thanks for the heads up though :applause:

64 bit OS

Hi ozymail

AFAIK 4 gigs of RAM are more than You need for running games and a 64 bit OS is useless if the programs You run are not designed to support that OS, usually if You are not a 3D high end programs user a "normal" 32 bit OS is the choice.
For what concerns Vista it seems that there is no problems for CFS3 but the impossibility to play on-line, and if You don't think to join on-line games there is no problems (but You don't know what You miss) otherwise You must get an XP system.

HTH cheers :ernae: and have always good flying

So it seems that that a 64 bit system is pretty much useless for gaming according to those facts and figures. I did read though that there were "HUGE" performance increases when playing games on a 64 bit system. The increases were not directly as a result of running the game and utilizing the 64 bit system itself, but the fact that the 64 bit system frees up system resources ??? I don't quite understand this at all as I am not computer literate. It kinda makes sense though but as I said, I don't know a lot. I have the opportunity to build a system that can be 64 bit if needs be but I don't want to cut my nose off to spite my face (so to speak).
My main concern is that I get to keep and run CFS3 but the kids can run their new games without too many issues as far as performance is concerned. Oh, did I mention I have the green light as far as the wife is concerned on this new build :applause:

My new system is :
Centurion case
Asus rampage formula
Intel e8600 quad core processor
New Hd 1 Tb
New hd 10.000 rpm whit system installed in
4 gig ram
Invidia geforce GTX260
Hi-Fi card is included whit motherboard ( see detail from asus )
and new windows vista premium .........
fast , very fast computer now .

So that's the 32bit system then? and how does CFS3 look ... great I suppose? I don't think I'll see a difference on my system as it's already able to run CFS3 with everything maxed out, but at least it can give the kids a few years worth of gaming.

I run crysis game at maximum setting whitout problem , not already install cfs3 , becouse after only 2 months , the seagate HD 1Tb have broken ( whit near 600 gb of cfs3 , cfs2 , cfs , fs2002 , fs2004 and il2 and some other flight sim whit addon installed ). and vista is 32 bit ..........

Not to be nitpicking or anything, but the E8600 is a dual (2) core, not a quad (4) core.

CS3 and 64bit Windows

Hi all, just to toss another opinion in for consideration....I run a Core 2 Duo E6600 overclocked to 3.2Ghz from 2.4Ghz stock, 4Gb OCZ Plat. DDR2 800Mhz overclocked to 852Mhz and the timings down to 4-3-3-9, one XFX GeForce 9800GTX 512Mb PCI-E overclocked a bit (810Mhz from 675Mhz) on a 680i motherboard from BFG Tech. It is all water cooled, and my CPU, GPU, and chipsets all hang around 32degrees under hard pressure. I run Vista Ultimate 64 bit, and CS3 runs smooth as glass. If anything, I would say 64 bit Windows manages and utilizes resources better than 32 bit, allowing the game application more room to breathe and stretch it's legs. With that Core I-7 rig you detailed out in the first post, I wouldn't run anything but 64 bit XP or Vista....32 bit cant make efficient use of the resources you will make available, but 64 Bit can....make sure you post screenies if and when you get that monster running....I would love to see the results of the GTX 2xx GPUs as I hope to see one (or a pair if I am really lucky) this year....

So if your running a 64 bit system, how do you go with installing day to day programs and/or run of the mill games? I read there were a LOT of issues with 64 bit systems with games bought off the shelf. I don't want to have any issues like that. The kids have all sorts of games but the more current titles are Far cry 2, Call of Duty (different episodes), FEAR, Doom 3. Is it now just as easy to install then play as per normal?:isadizzy:

Hi, I'm running XP pro x64 and have no problems what so ever. Some people say this is faster than vista when playing games. What ever happens go for a 64 bit system or your wasting your time spending good money on an up to date MB and CPU. Have a look at Intel X58 MBs too.
