Today I reminded myself...

Today I reminded myself why FSX can be such a great sim.

I launched FSX and as usual battled with Gamespy to get logged on, but I eventually hosted a MP session whereupon I was joined by an old pal from the EFFC days. We took out the L-39 out and scooted around for 30 mins of fun. Watching contrails, smoke and such fluid motion really made this short session such a joy and a light year away from what we used to experience in FS9.

So for those that like to fly solo, give it a try with a mate over the Christmas holidays and put a smile on your face.

I fly online a lot but NEVER through Gamespy!

We always use a direct connection and it is much better and smoother than going the GS route. All you need to know is the host's IP address and both systems need to have the correct ports open through their firewalls/routers (opening ports is easy to do).

I've never flown online with either FSX or FS9. Not sure why that is as with other sims or games I play them almost exclusively online. Will have to give it a try sometime.

Good stuff. GS is worthless imho. I get disconnects almost every other time I try to join. I did once fly with the Lotus RTW trip via direct connect and that was very fun!

The initial problem I find is connecting to the 'free flight' room, but once I'm in I switch to the 'bush flying' room and then I can connect with no problems. The biggest challenge I have is remembering my user name and password!

LOLOLOL...

That is too funny Nick...

We havent heard of that over here in the Colonies..

Here, the latest fad in animal advertising is Geico's Auto Insurance 'Gekko'.

They must have 30 different commercials for this year alone, and they are brilliant.

which even have bloopers! :icon_lol:

Awesome post Nick, you summed up my reasons for building her in one sentence. :) It's that very situation which I find most enjoyable in FSX, simply flying for its own sake, with friends, no destination needed. Love the shot too.

I agree gamespy is a bit of a nightmare, but that's almost always due to the overloaded free flight lobby. If you're having a disconnect-fest when trying to log in, especially on weekends, you can try the method I use to get around it.

If you go into your FSX.cfg and scroll to the bottom you'll find the default lobby that you enter into in quotes, like this:

DefaultLobby="Free Flight"

You can change it to any of the other lobbies (all of which have a fraction of the population) by simply changing the name in the quotes before starting FSX, like so:

DefaultLobby="Adventures"

Works every time for me, and as long as you stay away from the free flight lobby disconnects are very rare.

Cheers,

-Mike
