TrackIR 5!

FSX Acceleration!
Hey guys does anybody use trackir 5 with FSX if so whats is it like is it easy to setup, I just bought it and was just wondering if theres anyone here who uses it and what they think of it?

Love it, couldn't fly without it. However, not that easy to set up - there was a thread about this a while back. Definitely worth taking the time initially to get it working as you want, before trying to fly with it.

Yeah thats what I was thinking at £130 it ain't cheap either but for the benefits its definately worth it as it completely changes the sim! Just hope I can get it working ok when it comes!

Well, mine was installed wihout doind almost nothing!! Just install the software, reboot, open the soft TrackIR them open FSX! If the two green lights appear (In my case) than you´re ready and there it is working ... nothing more. If you bought TrackClip too you will like more as this make possible to use it in the dark too.

Easy plus +! :salute:

Ps: Just update the games list and verify if you´re running the newest version of the soft (As it comes in a cd with the trackir, maybe there is a newer version released)

If you have WINGS OF PREY, RISE OF FLIGHT, ARMA II, etc too you will like it .... very much.

It's dead simple to set up, all you have to do is understand what the curve represents for each axis. Once you twig that, changes can be made on the fly to get exactly what you want. Make sure you don't have a light source behind you though otherwise it cannot distinguish what it is tracking.
Also have a joystick button keyed to turning TrackIR on and off, that way you can freeze the view when selecting some small switch on the panel.

TIR is a brilliant piece of hardware. I use reflector clip on my hat. Here´s a FSX profile I´m very comfortable with. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/968960/wiltzei - Flight.rar The profiles are located in NaturalPoint\TrackIR5\Profiles.

I´ve assigned Precision, Center and Pause to my Sidewinder´s hat. The remaining compass point is reserved for aircraft spesific gimmicks such as autopilot/autothrottle.

Can I just say a big thank you for all the helpful comments, please do not be offended if you get some PM's from me when it arrives and I have got my confused head on, hopefully all will be well and I won't need any help but if I do then I know now who to ask.

Thanks again for the helpfull comments, Mates! :wavey:

I've had TrackIR4 for a few years, and I've been wondering what benefits "5" has...maybe I'll google it, finally. Peter, if this is your first TrackIR device, you'll be kicking yourself for all the wasted time you've put into FS with the hat switch. Moving your head around to see is the most basic part of real flying.

I conpletely agree, its fundamental to have this for a serious simmer! Really looking forward to getting it up and running now, should only be a few days!

I'm with the other guys who couldn't sim without a TIR anymore. One thing bugs me about it though, or more specifically the Track Clip Pro -- has anyone else found them incredibly fragile? I've now broken three of them over the years. That thin little plastic stalk seems most prone to damage, right where it goes into the swivel joint. My advice is to treat yours with extreme care. As for me, I'm back to my hat and metal Track Clip again. At least it's fairly sturdy!

Glad it's not just me! The Clip Pro is really fragile! One piece my dog got a hold of (the little part that hides the wires), once that was gone it fell out of my hands (about 2 ft from ground level) onto carpet and a small plastic clip broke off, thus disabling the receivers from staying in one spot. I recently got it replaced (under warranty) - I've only had the whole thing for about 6 months.

That being said I use Track IR 5 with that clip. I really like it but it took a few months to actually like it. I sorta hated it at first - couldn't find a profile that I liked, defaults I thought were very sensitive to head movement. Another annoying issue is the deadzone when you try to look up and to the left (while in the pattern etc). Because they ask you to place it on the left side of your monitor, certain angles don't work out correctly, and when I look too far up to the left the receivers fail to capture my movement and it just pauses at the last spot. I can look up and to the right no issues.

Other than that stuff it is quite realistic, great for GA flying, pattern work - though I sometimes disable it when flying IFR, or on an approach into minimums. But it's simple to pause and re-center it often. I use it for larger jets but I prefer GA with it.

I'd buy the bundle if you can get it.

The IR sensor needs to be in the center, and at a high elevation. I use the metal clip on a hat, too, so with the sensor in the middle it can stay locked on to the clip for symetrical head movement left and right. Put it at a higher elevation, and the bill of your cap won't block the line of sight between the clip and sensor when you look higher up. If you have a small monitor, you'll have to rig up a vertical stand for the sensor behind the monitor.

According to the manual the main unit should be on the left side of your monitor.... because like with the TCP it's located on the left side of my headset....

My coord is a stretch in the center but perhaps I will try it there

Bone, Just download the TIR5 software. It's a free update, and is much smoother and much more positive. Huge improvement!!

I love my TIR, but lately I've actually been getting airsick with it!! Not comfortable! I think it is caused by FSX's built in head bob combining with my movement. I have to turn it off and go back to the hat switch for awhile.

Thanks for the HU, and BTW, you can zero out the Dynamic Head Movement in the main FSX CFG. It makes alot of difference!

Can you tell us how it´s done? :jump:

Open up FSX.cfg, scroll down to "[DynamicHeadMovement]" and replace any digit by zero. It should look like this:

[DynamicHeadMovement]
LonAccelOnHeadLon=-0.000000
LonAccelOnHeadPitch=-0.000000
RollAccelOnHeadLat=0.000000
YawAccelOnHeadLat=-0.000000
RollAccelOnHeadRoll=0.000000
MaxHeadAngle=0.000000
MaxHeadOffset=0.000000
HeadMoveTimeConstant=0.000000

Save the .cfg file and you're good to go.:salute:
