TrackIR

Looking at some of the posts here, it looks like TrackIR has a great potential. How many of you have one and use it? Opinions? Does it do what it says it will? Do you wear a hat or use headphones? (I personally dislike wearing both).

Well, you can always take the little round reflective stickers that come with it and stick one to the middle of your forehead and one on each cheek, if that's what you'd prefer. But seriously, Trackir IMHO is the second most important piece of hardware to have next to a joystick. Once you use it, you'll wonder why you didn't get one earlier. No :bs:

It doesn't merely have potential, it lives up to it. It's like buying a joystick after years of flying with a keyboard. Once you get used to it, you'll never understand how you got along without it for so long. I've read that a few newcomers have felt a little motion sickness initially, but have never experienced it myself. Really, there's just nothing like being able to look around using your head, like in real life, especially if you're tracking bogeys.

I use a hat. Also have the earphone clips, but prefer the hat personally, though both work fine. I suppose you could tape some reflectors to your forehead (if you do please post a pic :icon_lol:), or perhaps devise some other contraption.

*** edit- darnit, CJ beat me with the sticker idea.

I second this. Best bit of kit for sims after a joystick.

I have to smile, though, at the tongue in cheek suggestions about sticking bits on the face etc.
I have had trackir since trackir 1. And, believe me, sticking little round patches on your glasses ( the bridge ), or directly on your nose, WAS the official thing to do with the first trackirs.. In fact, the kit came with a sheet of little round stickers!
Early users told many a story of going to answer the door, or nipping out for a paper and forgetting that stickers were on your nose until the quizzical looks from the public finally made you realize what a sight you must be :) :)

And it's true, but don't ask me how i know!

But, OFF without trackir is like Apple crumble without custard. :)

I'm curious if someone could take the hatclip, do a little bending. And adhesive tape the clip itself to your forehead.

Beats having the Pro Clip surgically implanted :costumes::costumes::costumes:

Thanks for the answers so far, is there anyone out there who has tried it and NOT liked it? If so, why not?

trackir

My question is, do you have to maintain a static position once you are setup, except of course the slight head movements. I think I might tense up and get stiff neck. This chair I'm sitting in now might have to go, too much movement. Just wondering.

If your view gets out of kilter (you move in your chair) all you have to do is hit F12 and it centers it. I mapped F12 to a button on my joystick. I lean into the turns, screws me all up.:isadizzy:

The only time I heard someone say they didn't like Trackir was the guy who had bad motion sickness. He said he just couldn't use it. I think he sold it cheap.

Stop wondering and order it;
1) Neck problems will disappear in the first few weeks, and you'll never know it
2) F12 resets the center, to head position

We had members in Phase 1, who flew everything since CFS1

They got BAD Airsick, who knew

I'd buy Dramamine Wholesale

But that's just me

Keep a garbage pail handy ( in case ) :costumes:

Yep Im not a big fan of it. Never got to grips with it I have had it for a year or so now on the odd occation I will dig it out give it a try and then put it back in the box. Now I must addmit it is one brilliant idea and works for so many people. I fly IL2 -FS9 online and OFF. Yes I have tried many setting including other peoples profiles and settings it's not for me but I will not sell it as I know it is good and just maybe one day it just may come together. As for the next thing to a Joystck for me it's rudder pedals (CH) every time.
I know this is not much help all I can say is if you have the cash then give it a try it could change your world or maybe not.
One last thing please guys please dont reply telling me how good it is I know, this is my OWN opinion.

ask and learn

Once again I overcome my reluctance to show my ignorance and I am rewarded with wonderful, helpful information. Thanks for the link to the free IR head tracker site. That is right up my ally. I just bought this computer and have little or no budget for extras. A free or low cost tracker has me excited. I will definitely investigate.

The greatest benefit of trackir is it gives YOU a huge combat advantage over EA compared with using the hatswitch pan. So if you want the odds against you consistently high don't get it.

R.........I tried it and couldn't get used to the twitchy feel of the views and gave mine away but I suspect that I didn't give it long enough to settle into habit. Somewhere out there is some benighted troglodyte who's a wizard at flying w/ a keyboard........and won't try a joystick.....for all the same reasons I'm putting up here about TIR. Serious players love it and have conquered the learning curve.....so I'm gonna buy it (for the second time)...and change the perspective....old dogs/new tricks.....when we believe it we're dead.

That's very likely down to the position of the sensor or room lighting problem (bright things behind you) Gaw. That can usually be cured by moving the sensor back (or if it's TIR v4 to your left a bit). Get the green dots roughly in the middle. Make sure you plug into a good USB port too - some are dodgy when providing power.

And it's Very, Very, Very tempermental when it comes to sunlight. Believe me I went thru hell, here in SW Florida. I was only playing OFF at night.
Even the natural daylight, could drive it around the bend.

Solution was Polorized Curtins, like the Albino's use. They didn't come cheap. But it was that or move the whole shooting match to another room. . . . . Stubborn :costumes::costumes::costumes:

I've had TIR for a couple of years and you can list me with the "next best thing to a joystick" crowd. SA is much more intuitive and natural (IMO). And the ability to move your head and line up the iron sights in OFF or to look down over the side of your aircraft is just fantastic.

Negatives: I've experienced motion sickness when I was already feeling a little under the weather, but I'm also prone to airsickness IRL:barf: (and yet I skydived for more than ten years...go figure:costumes: ). And you absolutely have to be aware of strong light sources in the background. After my wife rearranged furniture once my TIR was acting all kinds of strange. A little investigation revealed that a table lamp was in view of the camera and that was throwing it off. I lined the inside of the lampshade with aluminum foil et voila, problem solved.

Mike, I appreciate your speaking up as being dissatisfied with it. Just goes to show that nothing can please everyone. And the best way to help someone to make an informed opinion is to inform them if you think a thing is not so good. All voices should be heard.

Well you don't have to have the little reflectors at all. Some guy over at the A2A forum for BoBII found his TrackIR insulting, It lit up off of the reflection of his bald head.

Hehe, I wonder if that's the same someone in this very thread who had that problem.
