Trying my hand at the Alph P-40...

Duckie:
That's absolutely amazing! :applause:
Your work breathes new life into this aircraft!

But:
(Sorry for playing the rivet-counter once more)

I think the vent hole panel in front of the exhaust bank needs to be shifted a bit upwards (one pixel or two...) :

This pic shows a P-40N at Napier Field, Alabama, in November 1943 of Army pilot class 43-K.
Note the third row of the holes: It seems right about the centerline-level of the exhaust tubes.

Cheers,
Markus.

Hi Markus. You are absolutely correct. I knew someone would (should?) notice. However, there is a hard coded line (model seam?) where my top cowl panel line is (which is why I placed it there) and if I move the vent panel up to a more correct position it just looks bad to me, like I've made a mistake by drawing a line through the vent panel. So I chose to lower it to avoid that conflict, although, the off positioning will be obvious to those in the know. :kilroy:

It's hard to see in this angle but it is very prominent in a profile view. No matter what I do, that line does not go away. (As seen here in your "...Wildcat" paint).

So maybe some opinions are in order.

1. Leave the vent panel where I have placed it and not have the hard coded line go throught the top row of vents?

or

2. Position it accurately and see the the hard coded line go throught the top row of vents?

What do you think?

Duckie i paint for IRIS and i can see no issue with you uploading a paintkit, most IRIS paintkits i give out to people who want them are usually my masters with my 'refinements' on if you do upload and David spots it i'll just tell him i gave you the ok :salute:

Thank you, Smoothie. That's very generous of you. Proper credits will be given, of course. :salute:

Duckie the vent looks fine where it is, i can't really see an issue there, i for one rarely notice it... so through top row wouldn't faze me much...

You're absolutely right, Duckie!

I completely forgot about this seam...
It's one of those compromises we have to take!

Looking at yours once again, I think your solution is even better.
Seems like my "panel vs. hole size ratio" is a little out of proportion, I must confess...

Another nice detail shot:

Look how dirty this RAAF Mk.IV (P-40N) comes around! :d

Cheers,
Markus.

Hope they Help :) i'd use the lower image more, was from a kit...

Duckie, WildBill, and Smoothie,

I painted an exhaust opening for the IRIS P-40.

Cooling vents were not in the P-40N kit weathering smoothie, I made some of my own, but Dickie's look better with the curved corners.

A .psd of the exhaust opening is attached in the zip.

Used the .jpg guide below for location.

Smoothie, do you sniff styrene too?

Caz

I do 1/72, God's scale, this is my Revell of Germany Spitfire Mk V clipwing.

you could say i do... working on clipping the wings on my R/C Spitfire, and looking for a model to build, preferably Revell/Italeri... last thing i made was a Bae Systems Hawk 128, painted in a personal scheme, printed text onto paper then cut it out and used it as a mask, then put letters back over and finishe the scheme off, i'm odd i'm a Para who likes flying as well as falling :icon_lol: you do your exhaust staining/weathering with powdered graphite?

and Great work on the Inlets, once duckies paintkit is done i'll more than likely use that one instead of the one IRIS provided me with long ago, and hope to see Cleo III soon :ernae:

You know the only thing missing is a texture map for the antenna for the L and N model and an aerial wire for it in the .mdl file. Some things always go amiss, I can deal with that small snag. If I want it in a serious screen, I can paint both in.

Yeah, I can get by with it too but it sure would be nice the modeler(s) was still around and could map a texture for it but that is NOT a complaint, just thinking outloud!

shame MDLMAT or similar can't change the model colour for that part...... wait a second, wheres OBIO? that might just be so crazy as to work...

Now that I'm about to learn how MDLMat works, here's the stock Cleopatra II repaint (n_raaf_1) unshined:

She could use some more dirt indeed...

Fantastic work there guys!!!!

You guys are really making this plane come to live again!!!!

Looking forward to your paintkit for some SAAF paints :salute:

:icon_lol: More teasing I'm affraid, WH! I was out of town all last week on business, no time to play. But I've been playing all afternoon today. Gotta add rivets to the wings and the top side is done. Then do the bottom wings and she'll be ready for some war paint!

Oooohh. Looking good, Duckie.

I know about that business stuff. Always gets in the way of my flying. They won't let me play games at work. Go figure... :jump:
