U.S. is buying Russian Helos?

I cant offer a good answer on why Afghanistan isn't buying with there money. However on the purchase of Russian Helo's I can somewhat. Most if not all of Afghanistan's Pilots and crews are trained on Russian Equipment. If US made Helo's were bought and sent , the cost goes way up. You would have re train Crews and pilots and that will almost increase and excel the cost and extend the afghan mission. By going to Russian made you wont encounter that increase cost of training and also Russian Helo's are cheap. So in a way US Tax Payers are actually saving by going the Russian Route on Helo's for Afghanistan. Just my train of thought on this.

I'll go with CG's argument, because I cannot imagine anything untoward being afoot here and besides, the Russians are our friends now. There should be a sarcasm gif to attach here!

key point:

"Many of the Afghan forces have already been trained to operate the Russian aircraft. Switching to a new platform would delay the readiness of their rotary wing division by at least three years while crews get training and experience on a new system, Gregory said."

sounds like there just replacing old for new to me.

Nothing new here, they have been using Russian weaponry of all sorts for decades, now they have the money (U.S. money) to purchase new and replacement weapons, so they buy what they already understand and know how to use. Yes, I do see the irony, but it's just the way it is.
