UAL aircraft order...

Seems we've announced plans to update our fleet. I'm taking the news somewhat reserved as deliveries won't begin until 2016. Also, appears we'll end up retiring the 747 as a result - bummer! :icon_eek: Anyway, better than nothing, and overall I'm happy with some forward progress after so many years of decline.
Still need to look at something in the small narrowbody size to replace the 737 (Embraer 190 size). Funny thing, the Embraer 170-190 was nicknamed the "Guppy killer" when it came out. Proved to be true at UAL as I think the 737 was retired partly as a consequence of our express partners buying the E170.

I think they're not hedging their bets. With the delay in the 787 program, they're also planning on buying the A350. If production of one is going well, perhaps they will continue with purchasing just one type. Either way, this aircraft adds significant flexibility to the fleet. Flexibility is the key.

Dual Fleets

By going to 2 fleets you also reduce the chance of a fleet wide AD shutting down your ops such as the MD-83 wiring issue a few years ago. Best to have your eggs in a couple of baskets.
