UFO !

Tonight, about 0.30 hours, i saw something that, in my book, i could call a UFO...

I always do a last, short walk with my dog around that time. Usually very nice and quiet, just about the whole little village is asleep. Also usually i can hear a few jetliners pass overhead at their high altitude cruise level, just a faint, deep rumble, only noticable because otherwise it is so quiet all around. If i look up i can see them too. Although very faint, the moving, flashing strobes cannot be mistaken between the myriads of stars.

This time no passing high altitude jetliners, not that i could hear anyway, all peace and quiet... Not that i could hear but i certainly saw one...

It took only a few seconds for me to realize that it actually couldn't be a 'normal' jetliner because there was absolutely no sound to hear. And what's more, it certainly didn't look like a normal jetliner either.... No flashing strobe lights whatsoever, just a very abnormal BRIGHT, white light, moving thru the sky in a straight line from west to east. And, in my view, also at much faster speed compared to the jetliners i usually see passing over at high altitude. But the thing that struck me most was the absolute quietness.... very unreal...

The only thing i can come up with and makes most sense to me is that i might've witnessed the passing by of an artificial satellite.... I mean, there must be a truckload of these things doing their orbits around our precious blue planet nowadays.

What do you guys think i saw ??....

It's one of the reasons i LOVE my dog !

cheers,
Jan

Sounds like you may have seen the International Space Station pass over. Most satellites that I've seen tend to be hard to spot, the ISS on the other hand is very bright and easy to see since it's so big

I agree with Argo, it sounds like a satellite that you saw moving across the night sky. In 1969 or 70, I saw the Apollo moon ship orbiting the earth streak across the night sky as a bright light and it was on a straight course across the sky.
Sometimes I have seen the odd satellite streak across the night sky, just like that, not fast but at a steady speed.

yeah definitely sounds like the ISS, i regularly set up my camera on it's tripod in the garden and point it either North West or South East... after a night of it you get these nice streaks across the image.... Satellites, sometimes a meteorid... truly fascinating to watch....

EDIT: here's a site i use and may be of Assistance: http://www.n2yo.com/passes/

I was up at the mountains, about 3:30 AM, pitch black out, super clear, and here came a dot in the sky. No noise, high rate of speed, super high altitude, no strobes, pure white, tiny pindot. I watch it for a while. Its climbing the horizon quickly. I then notice a smaller tiny dot next to it. Both holding formation, no stobes.

I figure I had seen something alien and store it away and the next day, I hear on TV how the Shuttle was docking with the station, and if you had clear skies, you could see them together up there at night.

arrgh....

Seeing two small dots in the sky, one super small, no strobes, at 3:30 AM, one trailing the other, you immediately assume... 'Ok, this isnt totally right.. Who would be up at this time in a flight at that altitude??? SR71? Grays? heh....

There is so much junk orbiting our planet right now.
When I was still living in Montana, thanks to the lack of "light pollution", on a clear night I could guarantee anyone standing outside with me, I would find a satellite passing overhead within 30 seconds and usually did. ;)
I loved it when there was an ISS/Shuttle docking mission.

Here is a great satellite tracking site, which by default shows the ISS.
They even have an ISS notification tool to alert you when it's passing over your location:

when i was a kid, serving the newspaper at 5 am one morning, i looked up into the sky, and saw what i think was a meteor. it was a ball of light, blue on the outside, yellow on the inside, that went slowly across a piece of the sky. it musta been a big one, i guess. the road i was walking on was pretty well lit by street lamps. but i saw it clearly. that was 1975, i think. i never heard of anyone saying anything about it though. maybe i was the only one who saw it.

Thanks for your comments guys, and particularly for the links to the satellite tracking sites. Very interesting ! Didn't know about these. I'll sure be spending some time overthere ! :salute:

Believe you right away when you say that it's been the ISS that i have had the pleasure to see passing by. Very plausible explanation. ( pity really..... i was hoping for mailboxes and streetlight posts to start shaking and rattling and my dog start howling and barking.... )

Do you guys know Weather Report ? ( i don't mean the TV guys/girls that tell us we'll get soaking wet again when walking our dogs today but the one most fantastic and inspiring jazz rock combo of all times ) The sereen sight of the silent passing of this extraordinairy bright light thru the dark, star filled sky reminded me immidiately of the album cover of "Mysterious Traveller". Very dear to me.

It happend not to have been a UFO afterall but a mysterious traveller it certainly was to me !

Thanks again for the enlightment, gents !

Cheers,
Jan

Uh, it's not all that great.
Your kid gets abducted, you get a sunburn on half of your face, your wife leaves you when start making things out of mashed potatoes, and you max out the credit card to take a trip to Wyoming and see strange lights.
Heck, that's actually any of my vacations, now that I think about it...

Heck, that's actually any of my vacations, now that I think about it...
