USN Paint scheme help

I'm posting this question in the FSX forum as I know a lot of USN types hang out here.

I have converted Milton's Beech D18S to P3D v.4 native and a member here (Gray Eagle) asked me if I could do a couple of repaints for it. My question is regarding the aircraft above. Would that have been a bare metal scheme or would it have been painted silver/grey? I know a lot of RAF aircraft from a similar time period carried silver/grey paint but I need to know before I attempt a PBR texture for it as the process is different for painted textures vs bare metal textures.

The other scheme he asked me to do is easier as it is just an all over white (or cream) and red scheme.

There is a file called “D18S SNB Models.pdf” in Dave Carroll’s file “b18dc01.zip” available at flightsim.com. In that file is a photo labelled “Basis for SNB-2C 29642 1945 Paint Scheme” which makes me think that the 1945 scheme was indeed bare metal, though of course I could be wrong.

Sorry but I tried to extract a copy of the photo from the .pdf and failed miserably so had nothing to attach here.

I also have a copy of Dave’s repaint “beech_d18s_c-fhza.zip” and my interpretation of the photo “B18_03.jpg” is that that plane was also bare metal with red and white trims – based on the way that the bloom appears in that photo. But again what do I know . . .

Have you contacted the SOH user “Mick” about the navy schemes ? He has always made me think that he is very knowledgeable about such things .

Hope this helps,
Ro

I just found what might be the definitive video to answer a lot of questions. I WILL be making it a bare metal scheme after watching this:
