USS Essex CV-9 campaign released by Shadow Wolf 07!

Target rich yes, and apparently all in hiding to let you just cruise around uncontested by heavy AAA. Guess the defenders are hunkering down on account of the big guns of the task force bombardment division. :adoration:

Trust me, there was plenty of FLAK. I was lucky in this scene (the same plane position in space and time from different angles). I got a bit chewed on soon after. One ting that helped; I sent 2 pairs of wingmen in to attack Japanese 75.. AA guns, luckily along the vector of my first rocket attack and circled around behind them. On the next runs I wasn't so lucky. They crawled out of their holes and threw up considerable fire.

No need to bang your head M8. :D I will keep you and everyone else updated with screenshots and info. :wavey: We move up to the F6F-5 on mission 15 and your favorite, the SB2C on mission 23.

Flying as a wingman has its drawbacks. The AI don't always hold the plotted course and if you do, return warp won't enable. Then you'll have to fly back to your ship alone and unwarped. (I recommend using auto-pilot and sim rate at 4X normal speed.) It was a good mission though.

Progress Update

All wingmen doing good. 13 missions and lost 3 so far. Only 11 missions so far but will fly 2-3 more very soon... :biggrin-new:

Hey Wolfi: Why don't I see any gauges on my 2-D panel in the VT-19 Avenger?

Hey Captain Kurt: I'm sure I followed the installation instructions for your and Allen's VF-2 Hellcat. Why is this guy sitting in my lap? He's a "weapon" so should I drop his butt?

:dizzy:

Regarding the Hellcat pilot - you have to make sure you have deleted the US Pilot folder from the CFS2/AIRCRAFT folder. Also make sure the F6F/texture folder still has the us_pilot_1.bmp and us_pilot_2.bmp files in it. You've missed one or both of these it seems.

Regarding the Avenger panel gauges - you probably have your panel display settings set up differently than the stock CFS2. The panel bmp is over laid on top of the gauges. F3 should cycle 2D panel view, F4 cycle through the VC, F5 display/hide engine controls, F6 bomb view, F7 display/hide panel window 1, and F9 display/hide panel window 3.

In this panel F3 displays the 2D panel, F5 displays/hides the panel bmp overlaid on the gauges, F7 displays/hides the gauges and F9 displays the engine controls.

If you press F7 the gauges disappear like in your picture. Do you have F3 assigned to the display/hide panel window 1 function?

The other possibility is that you don't have the gauges in your CFS2/GAUGES folder. That is unlikely as they are the stock CFS2 gauges. So unless you removed them, they should be there.

That help?

Yes thank you, it helps. I didn't have US_Pilot in the texture folder. No instructions came with it in the d/l so I loaded it as a weapon in scenedb. Prior to that, I had no pilot at all. I will try it. as is now on my next mission. tonight.

As for the panel, I have all the stock gauges and likewise, this evening, I will fidget with the F function keys and see if I can't find them... I am an "old timer" with bad eyes and the reflexes of a sponge, so I usually fly from the HUD view. I wanted to use an old program called "ZoneAid" to put easy to use auto pilots in these 2 planes' panel.

Thanks again. :adoration:

The double pilot problem is solved. :wavey: The next time I fly the Avenger, I will try to fix the missing gauges glitch too. Meanwhile, off to bomb ships in the Kwajalein anchorage as a wingman...

In general the US_Pilot texture is in the main texture folder, if the texture isn’t in the aircraft texture folder CFS2 will search in the main texture folder for it. There is a pilot and gunner build into the aircraft; they will show up right after the engine starts.

Mission 16 - first use of the SBD-5

[strings]
"title_string"=Essex_BU-Truk Divebomber Strike_3BW3
"summary_string"=Cutie-1 will lead the flight on this mission. Take off, form up and fly on a 269 heading for 91 miles to RP ABLE. From there you and your flight will lead the first wave of bombers in to smash enemy shipping and installations on Truk. Your squadron will attack shipping in the Moen anchorage. Study recon photo 4. Your flight will damage or sink one of the light cruisers there. Other strikes will follow up shortly after. Good luck!
"objective_string"=Our fighter sweep this morning was a "sweeping" success. Enemy fighter defenses have been eliminated and the base is open to heavy bombing attack. We will launch at 0900 - the first of many raids throughout the day. Our objective is to destroy the larger IJN warships before they can escape and to finish off whatever aircraft they may have still on the ground.
"intelligence_string"=Japanese forces are estimated to be somewhere around 50 -100 grounded aircraft on the various airfields. There are 2-3 cruisers and supporting escorts with large numbers of transports in the 3 anchorages off Moen, Param and Eten. Expect heavy flak, light fighter opposition and clear weather with light winds - 12 knots out of 187 degrees - over the target area and at take off.

Making a successful torpedo run on one of Stuart277's new ships:

Hey Wolfi: I still don't see the panel gauges in the 2-D cockpit view. I will re-download the plane and replace the Panel folder and see if that helps.

PS: I think I found the error - I believe when I initially installed the acft, I forgot to install the Gauges pack. I'll giver her a try now. :adoration:

Mission 18 - 19

18

"title_string"=Essex_BY-Marianas CAP_1B3
"summary_string"=Raven, you are to launch immediately, form up (warp) and patrol to the NW at a distance of 50 miles at 12000 feet until relieved or recalled. Be on the alert for intruding enemy attack or reconaisance aircraft.
"objective_string"=We have advanced into the waters of the Northern Marianas to conduct strikes on the Japanese bases there. Hopefully we will bait out their carrier force and inflict a telling blow on them. We will be launching a fighter sweep later this afternoon and at the very least, we will smash his land-based aircraft based here, preparatory to invasion.
"intelligence_string"=The enemy has significant air assets on Guam and the other islands. Our destroyer screen reports that TG-58 has already been spotted by a Japanese submarine. We can expect prolonged air attacks at any time now. Be on the alert! Radar and the CIC will vector you to incoming bandits.
"player_aircraft_name_string"=FDG2 F6F-5 Hellcat VF-12

"title_string"=Essex_BZ-Guam Fighter Sweep_1A3
"summary_string"=Cockfight: take off and fly on a 296 heading for 220 miles to RP X-RAY. From there, your flight will proceed north and intercept and destroy any enemy aircraft that come up to meet you. Clear the skies and expend any remaining ammo on parked aircraft on the ground. Watch your fuel... you will be at maximum range. Maintain 190 knots until contact is made.
"objective_string"=We have endured attacks from Guam all day. Now it's our turn. Two squadrons from Essex will fly to Guam and destroy all the aircraft they can find in the air or on the ground. A strike group from Yorktown will follow up to finish the job, attacking the ground support facilities.
"intelligence_string"=Because of their day-long attacks on us, the enemy planes should be on the ground, refueling and rearming with fatigued pilots. Their squadrons were decimated by our CAP earlier today, so their numbers are greatly reduced. Weather is mostly clear with light clouds. You can expect moderate FLAK over the island and airbase.

I had to fly the Guam_Strike mission 3 times to survive the FLA and meet my mission requirements. It was tough! I also found it was the Pilot Log folder file that needs to be adjusted for wingman losses, so you don't get sent home in disgrace, halfway through this long campaign. Damned collisions! :mixed-smiley-010:

Also, I fixed a .cmg error which sends you to the Guam_Strike mission again in a different plane. So, on to the Marianas Convoy Strike mission... Mission 23.
