Van Johnson Dies at 92

Good grief, I didn't realise that he was still alive. Well ...... up to now.

I always enjoyed him in films. While not among the most accomplished of actor's he was always a pleasure to watch. :)

Sometimes words fail, the contemporay crop of actors, with a very few exceptons, will never live up to his standards.

30 Seconds Over Tokyo............

Man................is there a rerun on the classics that didn't have Van Johnson in it??????????????

That man was a movie machine...................

I'll start with my first thought.......B-25's........."Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo"....

Which is has CFS2 written all over it.............

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvIZntPuyZY

Second.........I would pull up ..Bastone......"Battleground"...........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNJBe3pH4Io

The ...P-38's.... "A Guy Named Joe" ..............CFS2 worthy

They made a civilian remake with a-26's and Catalina's (holly hunter and Richard Dryfus)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5tChMGrHno&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0G49M9t46g

and yes.........they were propoganda movies.........and he wasn't on the front lines.............but still ........he was everywhere you watched reruns...

What was the Bomber used in "A Guy Named Joe"

I was watching the bomber attack clip from "A Guy Named Joe".....

Can You Identify what make and model of the bomber formation.... the P-38's where shooting down..............(Hint.....are they japanese???)

Most of you watch these old war movies................and like me .......you can pick out the types of enemy tanks and planes used in the making of the films..............usually for the old ones.........they are incorrect US surplus military ..............So did the special effects guys use a correct model........???

So If you can.... Identify..............and take the challenge...........photo recon

Van Johnson ....in the pilot seat

For those who don't want to sit thru the youtube............

Here is a few CFS2 moments of Van Johnson in the pilot seat......

I never saw ...."Pilot#5".............and couldn't find any info.......so if you can ....post it.....

And I'll never forget this immortal line: "Ain't it the dyin' truth." For actors like Van ... they're like will not pass this way again.

Looks like a B-26 Marauder.

Martin B-26.............

I agree.................

They wouldn't have any Japanese models to work from.......................

So they went to the hobby store and got some B-26 and put Japanese markings on the wings.......

Yea,I remember Battleground..all star cast. Anyone remember the scene where the french girl is cutting the bread and the look on Van's face?:costumes:

Pilot #5 aircraft..........

Pilot #5.......Dutch Indies................aircraft in movie special effects

I am not sure.................special effects may have mixed and matched

My first guess was a Brewster Buffalo F2A-1...........but the wings are wrong and so is the engine cowl in the close up

My second guess is a Seversky (Republic) P-35 (J9)

I am going with the Seversky P-35 .........maybe parts of the Brewster Buffalo for the dive shot...

IJN Akagi or Kaga

I would guess the Pilot #5 special effects people had models of the IJN Akagi or Kaga..................???

Only thing I can't justify is the control tower is too far forward in the Pilot #5 footage???

They may have put it togther from photo's???

IJN Akagi

I am now sure they tried to model the IJN Akagi......................

Military Photo's where available in 1939 .... thru early 1941...................

So they would have been probably in newspapers..........magazines........

Special effects guys..........made a copy...........as best as they could from photo's

They got the control tower too far forward..................(see shadow)

QF 12 pounder 12 cwt AA gun

Ok.................here is the last one...........and it was tough.......

QF 12 pounder 12 cwt AA gun

or

QF 13 pounder 9 cwt AA gun

In 1847, engineer William George Armstrong founded the Elswick works at Newcastle, to produce hydraulic machinery, cranes and bridges, soon to be followed by artillery

They have cut off the 13 pounder damper tube or modified a QF or they made one from parts to look like one............

Welded on a site from a Maxim AA or some other AA gun

Notice: the japanese gunner hand placement in the movie trailer...........not going to have it long if real field piece.
