Vehicle Navigation HUD

dunno about anyone else, but haveing anything reflecting on the windscreen bugs the heck outta me, if you cant tell your speed by looking down, or read the signs, then honestly you shouldnt really be driveing in the first place.

Also what the heck happened to just useing an OS map?? they still work just fine, and dont send you into fields or off cliffs!
 
Glad to know I'm not the only one who still uses maps. Yes, I have a portable GPS and I use it, but I also like having a paper map or at least going online and looking at satellite images and maybe even printing my own maps.
 
yeah an OS Map or satellite view is my 'tool' of choice, if it's somwhere unfamiliar i also like driving it first, or if available google street view so i know whats coming up and where things are, sort of a dry run/Recce so if i spot traffic i know an alternate route off the top of my head without having to pull over and look at a map (Never do it driving, the blue and whites over here love catching you for that... the gits:icon_lol:), all we need now for us motorcyclists to get a HMSS (Helmet mounted Sight System), i can see the perk of a HUD to driving, in theory you don't take your eyes off the road, even for a split second though i don't see a problem with looking down at the dials... besides aren't road lines spaced at regular intervals so you can gauge speed from them...

all in all i find it amazing how fast technology is advancing these days but still... give me a Land Rover (preferably a 1970's/80's model) anyday... none of this modern electronic engine management :icon_lol:
 
From a safety standpoint I think those virtual signs etc could be very distracting, while I'm scanning them I'm not seeing the kid on the bike or the little old lady in the crosswalk.
 
Just another thing to distract drivers from paying attention to what is going on in front of, to the left of, to the right of and behind their vehicle. Too many people paying attention to the XM radios, cell phones, GPS systems, Sync audio systems, what ever and not DRIVING their vehicles.

And just another thing that really isn't needed. I don't have a GPS system, don't have a Tom Tom, don't have a GPS plug in on my old flip front non-smart cell phone (which stays in a leather case on my hip while I drive...no making or taking calls while driving). All people really need is a good old fashioned road atlas and a bit of map reading skills. I can get anywhere I want to go using a Rand McNally road atlas and an old military surplus compass. I like living primitive!
