Veterans Day

Jagdflieger

Jr. Admin
Today is November 11 and thus Veterans Day, Remembrance Day or Armistice Day in many of our countries.

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 was the end of WW I and thus the reason we remember our brethren on the eleventh of November.

I forgot it started today earlier for you, my brother in arms. I was just typing up a special thanks to you Jagdflieger and your JOES in harms way right now. This one is for you! :icon29:

I am safe and sound here in CONUS and was happy to have Birthday cake yesterday for my Marine Corps with fellow Marines serving in the Army with me now. Then I took part in a promotion ceremony for a fellow MSG being promoted to SGM with lateral to CSM in the afternoon, and more cake. Had to do extra PT in the evening. I might have one deployment left before I retire in 4 years.

But to all who are in harms way right now, THANK YOU. :USA-flag:
:ernae::ernae::ernae:

That thank you is also for all, ALL of our NATO Allies in harms way.

Having lived at a time when the whole world was at war, I was at an age when I had to go in the service. I escaped the draft and enlisted in the Navy. I served in East Coast stations and on board the Carrier we were mostly in the Atlantic. So I had it easy.
However I can't forget the 12 guys in my boot company that died. Six of them due to stupid, murderous, senseless, Kamikaze attacks. I can remember Grossmeyer, Truman, Hanson to mention a few.
So as a WWII vet, I cannot take any credit, but my mind goes to my teen age shipmates that were taken away from us much too soon.
These are the ones that I salute and remember.

Rgr that! Thank you to all our veterans for keeping us free and putting the bad guys in their place.

Also a shout out to our own warrior Jagd!

Thank you buddy!! :applause::applause::applause:

Thank you Jag, God Bless and keep you and thank you for your service.

Thank you to all serving and past service vets of all service branches. You give us so much. You have honoured us with your gifts. We will always remember you and appreciate you. Among those I remember today in my own family:

Sergeant Lee Gerlach, at Utah Beach, Radar specalist, Father
Airman Mort Lichtman, USMC Pilot, Guadalcanal and Wake uncle
Seaman Dick Vaughan, Seaman, LST, Pacific uncle
Captain Franklin Van Valkenburgh, appt Captain BB 39 Pearl, 1941 cousin
Commodore Murney Mintzer, USN ret grandfather

i had family on both sides of the war but i can say of those i know of, they served wtih honour and refused to ever take actions that would be beyond honour, or beyond duty as it required all to do,

thank you, and thank you those among us serving and who have served. here on SOH.

Thank you to all veterans and those currently serving in our Armed Forces at home and abroad. May God bless America always. :USA-flag:

This also includes other nations around the world who honor this day in various forms, such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day. May their sacrifices also be appreciated and honored.

Today was particularly poignant here in the UK as we also mark the passing of a generation, the service at the Abbey being the first without a WWI veteran in attendance.

At the going down of the sun we will remember them

Among those I remembered yesterday in my own family:
Capt Wooderson - k.i.a June 1917 - cousin
Sgt Edwin Clark - m.i.a. - Paschendale 1917 - Gt uncle
Cpl George Clark MM - d.o.w. Aug 1918 - Gt uncle
Pvt Herbet Liddle - d.o.w. Aug 1918 - Gt uncle
My Grandmothers fiance - killed Aug 1918

and the other 20, out of the 38 photos of relations, friends & fiances of my Grandmothers family, which hung on a photo board in the hallway of their house, who went off to "the war to end all wars", and never came back.
7 of the remaining 18 were physically wounded to some degree, the last to go, on an 80% disability pension until the end of his days (aged 99 and 9 months.). He would never go up in an airplane..."I saw too many of them come down over the front - you won't get me up in one of those......"

WW1 had a large impact on my family......WW2 and later was ......"kinder".

Our family don't support war any more! (but don't make the mistake of attacking us)

To all those who served for the common good or because they had to.. :ernae: :ernae:

Hewman I am sorry indeed to hear that. I recall there were three last year, I was very moved by seeing them. I saw a program ..i think it was last year. Time moves on....but what a loss to have no living link. Thanks for sharing that, and I certainly remember that generation such fine people.
