From some of the posts I have seen, I get the impression that Nvidia are generally regarded as being better than ATI for FSX. Would that be right?

I'd say more people lean towards nvidia for FSX. But the 5870 from ATI isn't bad either... in fact it's a quality card and lots of people run it without issue.
