Vintage scenery in FSX

Hello all,

I know that all the good Calclassic Scenery is no longer viable here in FSX ... here is what I have found that does work in FSX:

Key West 1950
Charleston Auxiliary NAS (KALF)
RAF Waddington (1980's - not exactly retro if you're 40, but for the purpose of this thread ...)

Any other sceneries, civil or military, that is set at least 30 or more years from the modern FSX period?

cheers,

I will be working on some... probably not in the near future though. San Diego and Pearl Harbor in the late 30's and early 40's is my working area.

I once got a pretty decent Floyd Bennett Airfield from one of the free sights (Avsim...? Simnetwork...? don't remember). I think it presented the airport as it was in the late thirties.

Hmmm ... found it for fs2002 .. will keep looking.

A couple more I found:

Cardington Airship Base
Rhinebeck Aerodrome

Let's keep them rolling ...

You can add my umpteen RAF WW2 airfields to the list, if you like:

http://www.ianpsdarkcorner.co.uk

There are also a couple uploaded to the scenery library here, I believe? Bassingbourn I'm sure is here somewhere...

Just as an aside, somebody here gave me links to photographs of some Luftwaffe WW2 airfield buildings, but I can't remember who it was, embarrassingly. If you're still here, can I have them again please? I really need to put some bases on the Southern side of the Channel!

If you are a Horizon VFR user, there are loads and loads of old airfields and even airports available. Just search FlightSim.com for Horizon VFR in the FSX scenery section. I did Tangmere (1953), Thorney Island (1974), Portsmouth Airport (1973), Hamble (1972) and have a whole lot more in the works for this autumn (I take a break from scenery design in the summer) including Lympne (Car ferries), Hatfield (1966) and several more long gone airfields.

Brooklands 1938 (EGLB) for FSX
by John McKeon (mckeonj@eircom.net) August 2009.

I thnk I got it at Avsim. It's very well done. This, and Old Warden, are my two favourite airports to fly my Vintage collection of aeroplanes. :)

That would have disappeared once the developer pulled all of his existing work off all the FS sites.

Indochina 1962 works!!

YES!!!

I got some splotchy textures around the airfield perimiters, so just as a wild guess, I unselected the landclass file - works like a charm.

Silly me, I never even tried my the beloved CalClassic files, taking Tom's word from the Calclassic site that the files didn't cohabitate well. I have to assume there are some that will indeed not work - but I'm going to start a package at a time - maybe I can still me my dream come true of a Silver/Golden Wings type environment in FSX - or at least partially, in certain areas.

But go fly it guys - Indochina works in FSX SP2.

Someone should concentrate on making 1920 to 1940 scenery as a goal. There are so many aircraft of the period that would love to fly into it. I am sure whoever gets with it for the long haul he or she would be applauded for it would be a great success in our hobby......yes sir.:salute:
(Not an easy task)

There's a simple answer to that, unfortunately, gera - information is next to non-existent for huge amounts of inter-war airports.

I'm trying to do work on a place called Nutts Corner in Antrim, NI, and can find next to nothing about it, even though for many years it was the only airport in Ireland - North or South of the border, with scheduled international traffic!

Likewise, Croydon. I can get the odd photo, but nowhere near enough to do anything vaguely close to a real world representation.

If you're prepared to collect absolutely every piece of information available then you'll probably be able to do more than a handful of inter-war airfields. It won't be many, though, and the research will cost you a lot of time and money.

Indeed. While making my Mokotow Airfield I purchased aerial photos of Warsaw from 1935 which I put into FSX and applied colours. As the aerodrome did not survive and there is a park with 60 year old trees I had to create every aerodrome building using b/w photos from many books. It slowered down the process and it took me about 5 months to complete the project. But I am really satisfied with the result.
If anyone is interested: http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=127957 Use Zipdive to open manual in the pdf to read about the scenery. May be worth to fly from Tempelhoff if you like Central/Eastern Europe flying.
regards,
Lucas

Hi Ian....I agree with you in that getting info is not easy. I have done some research and its not an easy task. Must it all be totally accurate??? I, particularly do not think so. So the field is there for who want to tackle it. I would gladly fly my old jigger into a 1935 "look alike" airfield with two or three buildings of the time.......but that´s my thoughts on this, am sure others have their own..I want to do a Mission of the famous French Aeropostale company but the only thing holding me a bit is this, the airfields of the period. I will eventually do something....:kilroy:

PS...I have found a more info on 1925-1935 airfields of South America than others, naturally in many Latin American aviation pages and all in spanish than English pages, early aviation in South America was very well documented. The Aeropostale company was covered almost everyday while operating in the South. I really enjoy those early aviation stories and news.

What we need is GW4...or more to the point a team willing to do all the hard work, lol!

Africa works!

This great scenery, just released for FS9 - works (with minor aberrations) in FSX!!

You get the "framed" people object thing in a few cases, but now you can have 50's/60's era destinations in lovely places like Cairo, Dar es Salaam, and Benghazi.

I haven't tried all the airports (there's a few dozen) but the aforementioned, in addition to Johannesburg, Capetown, Luxor, and Leopoldville all work well. Dakar is a bit jumbled - alas.

Will advise more as I go through these.

ps - here's the package on avsim - Bravo Calclassics & team:

</TD><TD width=*>[FONT=verdana, sans-serif]File Description:
We've produced this scenery to provide taxiways, buildings and details as they were around 1960 for airports with airline service in Africa. We've added custom GMAX or Sketchup terminals for the major airports, usually with many other details included. We've added a library object terminal and details to virtually every African airport that was served by an airline in the early 1960's. We have been working on this project for 13 months, and there are 105 airports/fields. All have scenery - some very sparse, others full of action. All airports have flags, lighting, windsocks, and rotating beacons. If possible, the airports are placed accurately with maps2bgl as reference.

Hi,

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier. Generally the taxiways, runways, etc. will be fine (they are just AFCAD files), and the buildings, etc. should work OK. There may be some problems with transparency as mentioned above.

The things that are not compatible are the landclass and the ground/terrain features. These BGL files usually have "background" in the name, or end with _3, _5, _7, etc. Those need to be recreated (if desired) by using either SBuilderX or ADEX to create the new ground polygons, autogen excludes, etc.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Thanks for piping in Tom!

By and large, the main issues I've noticed are the people figures, and some textures go funny at dusk/night. But in light of them being designed for FS9, the fact that they are "fairly" good in FSX makes me more than happy. If someone makes a dedicated FSX pack, that's even better! For now, though, I consider it a gift to have some locations in the sim (versus the whole world, in a GW/SW type set up in FS9) be little 50s and 60s time capsules. :icon29::icon29:
