Vol avec Arielle, la Guerrière du Ciel

This is a surprise project and I know that some of you will think I'm crazy (Yes, I know, most of you already think that). But, I am taking a chance that a few of you will think it is genius. You see, couple of months ago when I was looking for people to record French and Australian radio transmissions for new language packs I made contact with a talented little gal here at the outhouse that goes by the handle of "Cloud9gal." It seems she was very excited at the chance to be a part of the French project and it got me thinking, "Was there ever a French female pilot in WWII?" I researched the question and did not come up with anything. However, I could not help but feel those of us who are willing to stretch our imaginations (you know, us non purist, non conforming *******s that have no problem with breaking tradition) would love to hear a female voice in Combat Flight Simulator 2. So, Coud9gal created the character of Ariel, the Sky Warrior.

There are two really great things about this project. 1) If you are a purist and this add-on does not suit your taste, you have to realize that one of the draw-backs to making language packs is the time it takes to translate the 150 or so phrases CFS2 uses. Cloud9gal has done all the translating so if anyone wants to make a pack with a male French language pack it is now quite easy. 2) The second great thing is that we now have an add-on capable of attracting more female and French simmers. And, won't it be great to fly with a woman on your wing in CFS2? I must admit that while putting this together I had a few fantasies about our new little French cutie, while also wondering if Cloud9gal wasn't a 60-year-old overweight ex-biker chick (well . . . I did not ask her what she looked like).

I know I said I would finish the Australian project first, but Cloud9gal wasted no time in getting the radio transmission phrases translated and recorded so I knocked this one out first. After I finish a Pilot Kill Effect for this package I'll get the Australian stuff all sorted out and see where we stand. Sorry mates, I hope those of you down under aren't sore with me.

And speaking of Pilot Kill Effects, I would like some feedback on whether or not the space-saving low resource drawing mono recordings I did for the Italian pack are sufficient, or is the demand now for special effects producing stereo recordings. I have been messing around with my Audacity recording software and I can create some pretty cool sounds (echos and such). The thing is, in the past, using these kind of effects really killed frame rates. I just want to know if there are any of you out there who think your new computer can handle the draw of resources. I'm sorry I cannot offer a better quality of sound in the language packs, but CFS2 will not budge an inch when it comes to the space allotted for each phrase. Sometimes, when translating phrases to languages like French, the translation cannot be abbreviated enough to make it fit well. Therefore, I have to reduce the quality of the recording to make it fit. You will notice that some recording are better than the originals and others are poorer.

I uploaded the files early Saturday morning so they should be up before long. Anyhow, have fun with it and feel free modify these files. I do not speak French, I am only an editor. Let me know if anything needs changing, and please be specific, or else change it yourself. Ciao! :wavey:

Ah! Arielle is finally coming alive! Thank you for uploading the files erufle!
Even after spending countless hours translating and recording, I must say that I had fun doing the "Arielle" project.
Of course, it did not come without its small challenges, like not knowing how to translate a specific aviation term, or how to shorten the actual French translation, so Ed would not have to do a lot of editing.
Some of the sounds were fun to do! At some point, I remember thinking: How the heck am I suppose to sound like when I "pass out from pain"?? I mean, really, how does that sound when you pass out? I think I managed to make it sound as realistic as possible. I rely on all of you to be my toughest critics.

Also, if any of you, think of a better translation for certain words, please share with me. I am open to all feedback. I am hoping you will enjoy flying with Arielle- her character is a mix of strength and femininity. She loves her country and she is passionate about protecting and defending her.

I want to thank "erufle" for not only his patience, but also his guidance and constant feedback. It enabled me to really "get into" the character of Arielle.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any fantasies that might occur while listening to Arielle's voice. Even, when the fantasy involves a "60-yr old overweight ex-biker chick". Poor erufle!

You made me think!! And that is not frequent!! Thank you Erufle.

Weren´t the english pilots, during and after the BOB, directed by female voices to the correct altitude and heading to make the interceptions?

If we had some volunter female english speakers couldn´t it be recorded some changes in the "english radio calls"?

By the way, WWII microphones and speakers wouldn´t render good quality sound. I personally think that "bad" sound quality adds to the inmersion in WWII era simming.

Thanks Erufle for all your hard work. :medals: Also thanks to Cloud9gal."!!

Cheers, Discus

Let me get this straight, she spends countless hours translating and recording sound samples for you. Then, you say how you fantasized about her but was afraid she might be 60 and an overweight biker.

If I were Cloud9Gal, I would be a bit upset with you right now. If you were a true "Friend of C9G", you would know that she is in her 30's. She has said so more than once, here at SOH.

I don't know if she rides motorcycles, but I do know that she doesn't fit the image of an overweight biker. She is one of the classiest and refined members of SOH.

However, even if you didn't know anything about her, it is rather crass to refer to any member of SOH in the manner in which you did, especially of one whom helped you so willingly.

I think you owe her an apology.

I think they are still on talking terms. I'm sure many of us wonder what the other really looks like. Mariereid is not a woman, sorry boys.........Rick

Woah, John ol Buddy. I think yer a little off base here and I really don't want to detract from this thread any more than necessary but, I think you may have forgot one thing about our good and dear friend C9G.

This exceptional woman can hang with the best of us guys and she can dish it out as well as take it. Sometimes making us run for cover! I mean seriously, look at the harranging she gets from some of the guys in here, (myself included.) Yet she hangs tough and plays along.

C9G is very resilient. The fact that she was the second person to repsond to this thread and to do so in a positive way and, pay attention, she even quoted Erufle's little jest ... indicates that she's a worthy person.

I've come to learn that C9G has a great sense of humor, (even if it is a little perverse at times,) and has said many times that she is a person who enjoys scarcastic people, (knowing I'm among them,) but I do not think Erufle's comments were meant to disparage C9G in any fashioin.

I don't see where there is a need for an apology by anyone here at this time. And I hope it doesn't degrade to that point from here.

But I think your shot is just a bit off.

She's a big girl and quite able to handle her own matters, and I'm sure if she was offended, (which it appears she wasn't,) she would have set matters pretty straight herself.

Anyhow, back to the topic.

Its too bad I'm gonna have to miss this as I don't have CFS2.
Sounds like a great Package Eurfle. And thanks to C9G for her help and assistance in this. Just goes to show why she got promoted here just recently too.

I hope the folks that have CFS2 enjoy the package.
Mebbe this will be incentive to find a package of CFS2 for me and get this little gem.

:ernae:

Snuffy: Are you hinting around for a copy of cfs2 for Christmas? I have one more used copy, if you want I'll send it to you. Just pm me and I will mail it off to you. Fellas, really, let's just forget it, everything is fine. Merry Christmas all!

You know, when I read some of the posts in here, I am reminded of the strong "Code of Honor" that is upheld in SOH. This "Code of Honor" allows us to agree to disagree, it allows us to come together as a team & family, forgetting all differences we might have. It allows us to support one another, defend one another all the while remaining respectful of our opinions and ideas.

From the beginning, as a female in this forum, I have always been respected. And as you can see, you guys do not hesitate one second to defend a woman's honor when you believe it has been somewhat marred. I am proud to be part of such a dignified & honorable team. I know I can always count on you guys to support me.

jmig~ Thank you for being "a knight in shinning armor" and defending my honor. That was sweet!

Snuffy~ Thank you for acknowledging the strength and resiliency displayed at times. And you are absolutely correct, I can hang with the "big dogs". Bring it on!

BTW- erufle was dealt with....I might have left a mark or two but he will recover. Just sayin'...

Alright fellas' that was my ! You guys are awesome and that's what makes this group so unique- the multitude of personalities.

Now don't let me start cussing in French, cuz it ain't gonna be pretty and I will shatter another fantasy about "French cuties".

... Now don't let me start cussing in French, cuz it ain't gonna be pretty and I will shatter another fantasy about "French cuties"...

Hehe. Growing up as a French Canadian in Maine, we Beaudoin kids knew we were in deep doodoo when Mom starting swearing in French!! What we didn't discover until years later was that she wasn't cussing at all. She never did. They were just words she used, but we knew that they meant!

I am looking forward to have Arielle the Sky Warrior installed on one of my many CFS2 installations.:applause::applause::applause:

Now I better brush up on my French, last time I used it in Le Havre was in 1959. Mais je parle a petit pue de Francais???

Well done to both erufle and C9G.:icon29:

Discus had the right of it with some of the RAF radio operators.

As for female pilots, in Britain you had the ATA.

"The organisation recruited pilots who were considered to be unsuitable for reasons of age or fitness for either the Royal Air Force or the Fleet Air Arm (therefore humorously referred to as "Ancient and Tattered Airmen"), pilots from neutral countries and, notably, women pilots. A unique feature of the ATA is that physical handicaps were ignored if the pilot could do the job. Thus there were one-armed, one-legged, short-sighted and one-eyed pilots with the ATA. Representatives of 28 countries flew with ATA."

Well that covers quite a few of you lot.:icon_lol:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Transport_Auxiliary

From the US you have WASP's

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_Airforce_Service_Pilots

By the end of the war, WAAF's were operating world wide in helping pilots vector onto enemy aircraft or just operating local ATC.

As for erufle comments...well thats his fantasy, but if anyone knows a "60-year-old overweight ex-biker chick", send 'em to erufle.

As for C9G her name is Louise and she saved my job..

So I'll forgive her for the barber-pole legs and say thanks.

BTW, how many of you remember "Kimber", and fantasized? (bet some you wished you hadn't).:icon_lol:

regardless Collin:ernae:

I have a good French pronunciation (with a certain south accent) and I also speak Langue d'Oc. If you teach me how I can record voices at my computer I can read the phrases Louise wrote. She can also record the control voices and I can record the combat guys. This could be a nice enhancement. Where is Kimber? She was a very nice person.

Collin~ You ARE incorrigible! :173go1:

LOL @ calling me Louise! I got it, but some of the guys here, unless they frequent the Cantina, will have no clue what you are talking about.

So guys, for the record, my name is not Louise! *shakes her head at Collin*

Sorry, you don't like my Christmas stockings Collin- I like them! They are festive! Reminds me of candy canes.....

And wouldn't a Russian scenario be fun. Lots of female pilots there!

Yes, I found out that Russia actually has two or three female aces. For me, however, any such project would be quite a ways down the road. If I could actually find Russian speaking volunteers I might move it up. I am currently working on Australia and would like to do Spanish next. My reason for doing things in this order has to do with a survey I administered a few months ago. I am excited about these two because at least I know the languages involved.:jump:

Wow, it was just a joke. Anyone who knows me understands my sense of humor. But just in case:

Cloud9gal, on my bended knees I apologize to you!

Please understand that Cloud9gals appearance was never an issue during this project and inquiring about it would have been in poor taste.

Cloud9gal, are we still cool????? :frown::toilet:

Before you consider this I must also emphasize that a certain amount of acting is required. That is what C9G did so well! As far as learning to record - there are no lessons. If you have a microphone on your computer its just a matter of turning it on, exploring the program that works with it and giving it a try.

Prof. Erufle: We all know where you were coming from. Thanks for doing this. I may have to get it, just to listen to a french lady! Oh la la! (does that mean anything) :ernae:

Let's keep things civil here, guys. Be aware....we are on alert.

I am so sorry Rami! This is the second time in a week my sense of humor has gotten me in trouble and my head is hanging ever so low. Please accept my apology. I was actually trying to make a point.

The message I was trying to convey is that Ariel is a character created by C9G and myself, and C9G should not be confused with Ariel and vice versa. This project developed just like a high quality motion picture. C9G demanded that she receive quality direction just like any movie actress who wanted to make sure her character was well developed would do. I responded by asking her to put as much feeling and emotion into her character as possible. She did an excellent job of this and should be commended. In fact, I am not sure that her excellent acting skills are all that evident in the finished product because of all the editing I had to do to get the transcripts down to the proper size, which reduced the quality of the transcripts. Just trust me when I say she was great and should receive accolades from all the CFS2 faithful. As I am writing this I am not sure if the file has been posted, but when it is you will find the following written in the introduction:

I met this fantastic lady, Cloud9gal . . . Please pay your proper respects to Cloud9gal in the forum . . .

These sentence fragments represent my true feelings about C9G. As for my fantasies about her character (Ariel), I am sure that no woman could ever live up to them. That was the point I was trying to make. It was also my way of saying that the character of Ariel will engage a man's fantasies while flying CFS2 in a way that will enhance the experience.

In re-reading my original post, I cannot see how anyone could have possibly misunderstood the feelings I was trying to relay to people regarding C9G. I can, of course, theorize, but that would only start more trouble, and I do not want this project to be tainted anymore than it already is. PLEASE HEED MY CALL ALL YE CFS2 REGULARS. Get me out of trouble here and tell C9G just how much you appreciate her efforts!
