W11 Defender or Norton360

I used to run AVG and Ccleaner.

Norton/Synmantic/McAffee? No way, I ditched those folks back in the 90's.
Kaspersky? Um, who better to protect you from Russian hackers than.. Russian hackers?? :dizzy: But, they sponsor McLaren (or is it Mercedes?) in F1 so they can't be that bad. :unsure:
One thing about A/V programs, they were supposed to be freeware so they could control the spread of virus to other platforms.
Paying for anti-virus that has ads in it? Think about that one for a minute. :ROFLMAO:

Anyway, Defender is basically the bench mark for A/V software. I dropped AVG once I figured out it was only running scheduled tasks to launch Defender. :dizzy:

Today, I keep an older install program for the free version of Ccleaner. If I think something's invaded my registry I'll do a re-install, run a scan, then delete it. Its also handy for purging cookies, where most of the hassles come from. Everything else (Win 10 and 11) gets handled by Defender.
Ccleaner still works, at least parts of it, but they've added too many "strings" to keep it installed permanently.

Your mileage may vary, but do yourself a favor and do the homework. Dig into what these A/V programs really do and drop the "smoke and mirrors" stuff.

One ugly truth about flight simming, we're as big a target as the RPG gamers and the "adult site" fans. If I'm searching for FS freeware and land on an un-attended/shut down web site, I bail out ASAP and re-install Ccleaner for a scan. :eagerness:

BTW, It's not my intention to dump on anyone who runs the old "tried and true" A/V anti-malware programs, freeware or paid service.
If that lets you sleep better at night then it must be worth something, I guess?
Just do your homework and figure out what you're running.

One other useful tool I often use - Revo Uninstaller. This does a registry scan after uninstalling the unwanted program/app and gives you the option to delete all the redundant registry and pre-install entries. There can be dozens of them too, it's well worth doing.

One thing i find remarkable is that you all hate Norton (it's safe to say that, right ?..) while at the same time it's usually in the Top 5 of AV programs and even at #1 at some... On top of that, somehow i've always felt 'safe being protected by Norton'... True, cost me quite a hole in my portemmonee thru the years but feeling safe while googling the net, downloading and installing stuff and just switching on my precious machine while i know a million gangsters and racketeers are waiting for a chance to visciously attack it, is the next best thing since sliced bread, isn't it. Worth every penny if you ask me.

Anyway, while downloading an Android emmulator proggy so i can order sliced bread from the supermarket which is than brought to my doorstep (always hated supermarket shopping, i do this for years already, best thing since...uhh....sliced bread) something else krept in on the side : Avast..
Ok, if that's not providence what else is. Clicked on it and so i now have Avast (McAfee.... ?? ) to protect me from the mobsters.

The thing is though that i'm now on this new superduper machine and somehow can't get into my email server anymore. I *did* receive emails but when i tried to send a first email the sh*t really hit the fan. HARD!! Probabely because with all my tries of creating new passwords and change settings i made it worse rather than fix it. Somehow all of a sudden my internet connection dropped down to a deplorable stage where i have to wait 5 minutes looking at a revolving open circle before a website finally shows itself (i'm used to a second or two...). Dramatic development !! :sick:

Anyway(2), i now have something much more worse to take care of than thinking about what AV program to use (just to be sure i uninstalled Avast). I'm getting in touch with my email server tomorrow (thru telephone! remarkable...) so hopefully they might be able to clear things up for me. (is it in any case possible that having no access to your email (and internet !) provider can mess up your internet connectivity too ?....)

Isn't that what Windows does when you uninstall a program via the programs listing ?....

Sadly not, only what's in the program folder. Many programs/apps wil! scatter .dll's etc. all over the registry. They're probably harmless and don't take up any disk space, but I like things neat and tidy just in case.

Btw, i have my email working again but not without help of my email/internet provider. On the phone with an employee for about an hour with the same result i had been fighting with for the last couple days : connection failed... All he could do was advice me to try another email program while Thunderbird had been working flawlessly all these years. We tried Outlook first and Bob was my uncle within a few minutes. Who would think that an email program one has been successfully using for years would suddenly out of the blue falter ?.... Cost me two aggrevating days too... :mad:

Another falter : we also tested internet speed and it proves about 10 times slower than what it should be ( lightning speed ). It's a little better now but the guy will sent me a new ethernet cable. If that doesn't solve it i might have to return my brand sparkling new computer to Mike who put the thing together.

Things fall apart when they need to be rebuild

10 times slower than what it should be? Have the guy update the BIOS and firmware of the machine, and reset your modem. I'm guessing you're on fiber? If so, reset the fiber box too. In this order: power down your modem, leave it like that. Power down the fiber box. Have a very large coffee. Power up the fiber box, anbd when that is done (all lights buring as they should), power up the modem. When that is all done, try again.

How long is that ethernet cable anyway? But whatever the length, a cat 6 or 7 cable could help. But if you had full speed before this new rig, then it definitely isn't the cable.

Yes, we did reset the modem, no result. We did not power down the fiber box ( yes, i am on 'glasvezel'.. ;-) and will try that now. The KPN employee asked for the lenght of the cable too, it's only 1,5 meter. For the 2 years i live in my new home here it worked absolutely fine. You're absolutely right too about having full speed before so a new cable won't help.

When my old machine went to the dogs i bought a laptop, that runs on wifi, lightning speed.... Actually and stupidly i didn't think about that when i had the KPN guy on the phone....I choosed fiber for my computer because i heard/read things about wifi i wasn't that happy with. I might give that a try for my puter too if nothing else works.
