Walrus in FSX

Molyneds Shagbat is out, but has been having some problems in FSX. I did some preliminary contact point work, did not even try the original, too many folks had come a cropper already. The first thing that leapt out at me was the MOI looked way off, so re ran the numbers, looked at the model (GofG, static height ect ) pounded out some contact points that looked about right, and it seems to work well indeed. Lands afloat, takes off fine. The water rudder is totally ineffective, so that needs work. Ground steering is ineffective, so added differential brakes to help that along. Still needs work, as she seems a bit over gunned performance wise, but it goes very well in FSX now. I think. Its only been on my computer, I have no idea how it will behave out in the real world, so lets find out. Did not take any screens, sorry, and I am using the OzX Goose effects, so if you do not have the HD Goose in, you will need to change effects. Its another lovely model from the Britsim crew, subject to FS9 port issues-prop cloud, though not very pronounced. I like it a lot, though I do hope Rob dusts off his native project in the future!

Just been to Britsim but cannot find the Walrus. Can you point me to a download please?

Er, no - it's not having problems in FSX because it hasn't been built for FSX - only for FS9 (I don't run FSX).
However, understanding that a few folks might want to fly it in FSX, the team is working on a solution. :applause:
As we say - 'watch this space' or 'patience mon brave'.
Cheers:guinness:

I agree with what Dave has said here. We are currently investigating the problem and perhaps there is a way around it, but must stress that the aeroplane was intended for FS2004. I think we had everything there was available on the Walrus and besides reading every book and magazine, looking at lots of photos and making sure that the Pilots Notes matched what we achieved, this is an accurate model. With wonderful help from the Fleet Air Arm Museum, it is a worthy replica as far as the software allows and everything that was modelled was as accurate as we could get it.

That's the way that the three of us work. If we can't find the detail, then the project is scrapped and we go onto another one. Its always been our intention to build as accurately as possible. Do it right, or don't do it at all, as maybe there is someone out there, that knows more than we do. We've had wonderful replies from persons that either flew or owned our previous models and contact like that, makes it so worthwhile. I hope people are enjoying the Walrus and as stated above, we hope in the future to offer you all a different configuration that would allow the aeroplane to go on land and sea.

Thank you,

Martin

Although I'm sure it is a very good model for Fs9 the frame rates ported-over to FsX are poor on my system and so will not be useful for me. It's a shame Rob decided to abandon his FsX native Walrus as I have wanted one for many years but no longer have Fs9.

No CTD, hopping, wallowing ect. The water rudder is ineffective, needs work. I strongly feel that the bad FSX water manners was the MOI numbers. Works a charm now except for the water rudder. Oh, and she will not decelerate below 28 kts with the fan on, but that is just a matter of fine tuning now. Nice, very nice. Framerates are pretty decent, even with a bunch of steam irons in the water.

There does seem to be a touch of confusion here at the moment.

Developers, Guys, you did an awesome job... its a great plane :) Yes, its intended for fs2004, and it will obviously have issues in x... its not designed for it, but as we love it so much, we want to use it without one of our own. Hence Roger's frame issue... he's in fsx not 9, and ports have a higher impact than native aircraft.
If Lazarus can get it working, he's done a job for you, see it as a compliment that the aircraft is in such demand, not an insult to your work.
We know and appreciate the hours and money that can go into developing an aircraft, its hard and long work that can burn you out several times in the process, but its worth it, and what you guys made, is testament to that.

Lazarus; thanks for the work, I'll test it out and let you know here how mine responds, but I'm eager to get this gorgeous ship working right in x.

Oncemore to Dave and T6flyer, thank you for your hard work, I love the aircraft, and hopefully with Lazarus's work, its going to float for me (if you pardon the expression)

Edit: on testing Lazarus, its improved, but it still skips around 25-30kts on the water when she slows, and won't respond to control inputs when starting due to the same phenomena.

FS9 models and frame rates are a funny thing. On my rig; not a super computer at all! most FS9 models run as well as the smoothest native models. There is a handfull that are nasty on frame rates. Draw calls are the most frequently cited culprits.
The shagbat is sitting on the barge right now after a hairy taxi, during which I see the cause of the water rudder ineffectiveness. Once the model is on the water, all the control axis lock untill the model is back off the water. Now, I know I've seen this somewhere before, and there is a fix for that, so pull on yer remember'in hats.
She flys and comes aboard just wonderfully out of the box. Its a beautiful model. Thank you Dave. I am certain there are no insoluable problems, just fine tuning.

Sounds like the same locking I had... which I recall is it actually skipping, but so minutely you dont see it, but the aircraft isn't interacting properly with the surface.

A few thoughts

Always nice to see folks reactions and comments to a new model of ours even if this time you are in the wrong sim (I'm a dedicated FS9'er).:icon_eek:
A few points need clarification -
The water rudder is activated by SHIFT-W
The wing fold command is F9
The differential brakes by F11 & F12
All these are present and working correctly in the model despite any comments to the contrary. However these are all FS9 key commands and so may not be the same in FSX.
Meanwhile work is progressing on trying to get it to float nicely in FSX .
Cheers

Water rudder is CTRL+W in FSX!
Don't think Wing Fold from FS9 works in FSX - at least my Proctor doesn't!

Dave: if you do get it sorted, you'll have my eternal thanks, because I love this little beastie! its amazing :) You guys did great work on the accuracy and animations, Also, I seem to recall the wingfold working with the fsx assignment (has to be set by default) (or might be confused)

PS: random question, are you going to make blank textures available? or could you? I've got a strange idea in my head for a south american adventure with a war surplus walrus! :D

Paint kit

Firekitten - glad you like the old ship - only a few left in the world - in museums. One such museum Walrus is near Martin, that was a great help.
I haven't got a blank textures template - sorry and I don't use Photoshop. Although I always start out with the best of intentions, I always forget and texture some parts without using the base gmax template layer.
As for as repainting the aircraft as another Fleet Air Arm one, that's mainly a question of changing the squadron code and serial numbers - not a problem.
Cheers

I can confirm that wing fold (when assigned a key combination) works nicely.
