Wanted: VA-205 Green Falcons A-7's from NAS Atlanta mid 70s

Great looking birds, Eric. Thank you. :encouragement: :encouragement:

Thanks guys. Yall are some impressive company to keep. :wavey:

Duckie, now we gotta get hold of the Milviz F-100D and paint that sucker as a 116th TFW GA ANG bird. I got to sit in and fly the GA guard simulator for that airplane a few times. Neighbor across the street was Col Don Hubbard who was a commander with that squadron in the late 70's. This was right before they switched to the F-105G.

One question guys. I noticed a small error in the CAG bird repaint. There is not supposed to be the black anti glare panel extended onto the white radome in this particular repaint. Where can you find the bit of black that extends onto the radome in this paintkit?

EDIT: Nevermind... figured it out! will be a very minor update to this skin set that I will post as a link here later.

I was actually in the Army Guard OV-1 unit (159th Avn Co.) stationed at Dobbins when the Air Guard began swapping their C-124s for F-100s! Talk about culture shock! It was really fun watching the Marine F-8s and that first F-100F and occasionally get to taxi with one if we were flying the same weekend. That "F" was the only one they had for a long time.

I remember those OV-1's. :)

I was not aware that the Marine det at NAS Atlanta had F-8's!!! Some years later, I got to know some folks with the Marine squadron (VMFA-142 Flying Gators as I recall). and got to fly their FA-18 simulator as well. that was cool. That was in the 1990's.

EDIT: Ok.. did some googling. Marines VMF-351 flew F-8K's out of NAS Atlanta. One photo I found showed a bicentennial tail meaning that NAS Atlanta has Navy A-7's and Marine F-8's on the same ramp in the early 70's? How'd I miss that?

The F-8s were actually shared between the Navy and Marines. Some still had the old NAVY/MARINE markings on the fuselage. F-8s just "looked fast", and were! And loud! Get a pair of those running up in burner before brakes off, and the sight of the raised variable incident wing, the senses were just flooded taking it all in!

Before our unit moved from KFTY to KMGE there was a fatal accident where the wing fold mechanism of an F-8 failed on take off and it rolled in on the runway. The pilot tried to eject but too late.

... and a darn nice paint scheme they wore, too ....

Found that picture as well. Wish there was a top quality F-8 out there now. I have the old AS version, but its old.

And glad you like my little birds. Since the paint is worn, heres the update I promised for the CAG bird 76 livery. This just updates a couple of accuracy issues.

Enjoy!

Ah yes, the lament for an update Cru has been sung by so many, for so long .... pre DX10, both the AS/V and Rollus versions worked just lovely. Post DX10, the Rollus just has too many issues, and the AS/V, with the latest DX10 fixer a few days ago, my canopy went all opaque and buggered, plus I can't get Jafo's cockpit enhancements to work, even though I sprung for a wide-format monitor ... :banghead: I think I'm just going to have to cut the lines on that one, and simply enjoy the memories in FS9 and early FSX days.

That said, Sylvain (Sprouty) from Royale French Navy are working on an F-8E (FN) - been a while since an update though ...

Thanks for the paint Eric - will it work on the line bird? I'm at work, and won't be at my sim pc for a couple of days....

cheers,

dl

The update just fixes a couple of minor details on the CAG bird that I missed. Nothing major and dont apply to the line bird. BTW, the original pics i put in this thread show E model aircraft in pics 2, 4 and 5. I painted the earlier B livery because of the flashier rudder.

I might do the all gray bird as well just complete the set.

Huh - on all pics I see the 2 small Colt Mk 12 gun ports (1 per side) and no distinctive single big M61A1 bulge on any of the portside shots ... and since VA-205 didn't get their Es until 1984 (http://www.history.navy.mil/download/va175209.pdf, p. 270), it seems like Es were painted TPS ...dunno ... I'm probably missing something :dizzy:

Anyway, thanks for confirm the file issue. If you do that transitional scheme, I'll fly the pants of it too. Those early '80s schemes were vary short-lived, very rare, but there's something lovely interesting about them, to me at least. Forrestal and Midway Phantoms flew similar schemes, and they look smart. By 1983, you could really see where the paint direction was going ... these are VA-56 birds off Midway CVW-5 ...
