Warbirding Over the English Countryside

Love the aircraft/weather, but the ground textures look very washed out and blurry at low level. What scenery is it ?

Dick,

In both John's and my screenshots, the scenery is the Horizon Generation X VFR photo scenery.

John is also using the Earth Simulations Treescapes that match accurately the trees in the VFR photo scenery.

As for it being blurred at lower level in my screenshots, this is down to my ageing system, (AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ w/Radeon HD4850 & 2GB of RAM, HDD), which actually doesn't run FSX too badly with careful selected and tweaked settings, but sometimes after a flight in something quick to a new area, it does get a bit blurry at times.

However, somedays it's better than others!

That all said, Photo scenery in FS as a rule looks better from a 1500ft or above than low or ground level.

You can see from John's shots though that the VFR scenery looks fantastic lower down on a newer, more FSX capable PC.

Cheers

Hi Paul - ah, that's what I thought. I tried the Horizon scenery, and while it looks great at altitude , even with Treescapes I found it unconvincing at low level. I'm now flying with UTX and FTX Global, and the UK has never looked better, at any height. Given it is not map-perfect, but it's perfectly possible to fly VFR using water features, coasts, conurbations etc. I disable all UTX roads, and the result is IMO a pretty good representation of wartime British countryside.

But that's just my opinion and what works for me. Thanks for posting some really great pix !

Glad you like the screenshots Dick, although mine are not quite up to the standard of John's!

It would seem that not only simmers, but real world pilots who like to sim as well, are divided over Photo scenery and the likes of UTX and FTX scenery.

But I'm pleased you have found the UTX & FTX Global suits your needs, and at least you have tried the Horizon Photo scenery, and have made your choice based on your needs and experience of the both products.

I guess that's the great thing about an open architecture Simulator like FS - you can use stuff that suits your tastes, needs, and preferences.

Cheers

Paul
