Warbirdsim P-51D "Twilight Tear, Then and Now" Released (Payware)

I'm so looking forward to trying that out, Jim!

Speaking of challenging airports to takeoff and land at in a Mustang, check this out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1sjSBWtiZo

To get the full effect of just how thin the runway is, jump forward to the landing. You really can't get a more narrow runway to land a Mustang on!

I think John and his team deserve the name "Masters of the Mustang" or something like that lol, superb detail and quite clearly a labour of love. :applause:

Gentlemen, this is your checkride challenge. 2 local strips I fly from with one being on a lake making for a difficult landing and a even trickier take off.

Start a SC99. 3000 narrow asphalt. Fly Nnw and approx 5 miles or so is SC14. 1700 grass/dirt. Only way to get in is to approach runway 30 over the water. Trees on the other end spoil that approach and make a go around almost suicidal so nail it. You cannot come up short or float it so you gotta keep it tight and hit it.
Suggest a carrier approach right at stall speed, full flaps,50% or less fuel. Taking off is also hairy.
Good luck.:cost1:

Ok, I'm not much of a fighter-guy, so I flew the route with the Mustang inside my Super Guppy... does that count?

View attachment 64625 Plenty of room. This may be cheating a bit, as the view from the front of Guppy is much better than a Mustang.
View attachment 64626 Larry the Flight Engineer was screaming with delight on that landing... I think.

Hey John, will there be some other way to buy this other than at the Warbirdsim site? Not had the best luck with Paypal, so I usually use Flightsimstore.com.

What the he** hahahaahahha.:mixedsmi:

I stalled short once and twice over ran the runway last night and I thought I had this strip mastered! Now you are just showing off lol.

My all time favs for raising my blood pressure are FlyTampa St Barts, Saba and Aerosoft's Lukla. There is also a short strip on top of a mountain near Anchorage named Blad Mountain"I think that its".
Even without Activesky real weather/wind its tough but with dynamic weather it can be brutal. Worth checking out.

Barfly, it should be available through vendor's sites sometime within the next few weeks I'd imagine.

Here's a little sneak peak of some of the exclusive repaints that have been made to better illustrate and expand on the history of "Twilight Tear".

Following the end of WWII, the aircraft was purchased for the Swedish Air Force. Once in Sweden, the aircraft was registered with a new serial number, Fv26158. The aircraft was assigned to F16, and first coded "Red D".

And in the early 50's, the aircraft was purchased by the Israeli Air Force. The aircraft at this point was re-registered as IDFAF 3506 (though period photos show the old Swedish serial number still applied). More soon!

Swedes are looking good John, but I'm missing the Swedish stencils?
You can use one of my Swedish paints as an example, or I can send you additional information about the stencils that were applied in Sweden if you like?

here's an example:

also, I have the feeling that the walkways are a bit too narrow at the front of the wing. Most of the pics I have of Swedish Mustangs (sorry, a bit of a hobby), show that they extend further outward.

Here's another example:
FX14695.jpg

Also, as these wide walkways were only introduced in february 1950, you might consider giving 'Rot David' (Red D) just the narrow walkways, as this is what the aircraft looked when it first came to Sweden. I have not been able to find when it changed to 'Gul Kalle' (Yellow K), so it may have been after feb '50 of course.

Thank you Jan Kees! I could definitely use some resources for the Swedish stencils! Most of the resources I have, are just from scrounging around the internet. I'll be sure to look at the walkways again too...and thank you for the bit of background as to when they switched, as I was wondering about that.

BTW, just out of interest in posting about it, I've found no historical information that would say that this aircraft was painted as "Yellow K" in the Swedish AF. It seems that connection all came from the other Mustang, that was believed to have been the original 'Tear at one time (the one that went to TFC), when it was flown on the civil register, painted as Gul Kalle.

Here you go, two scans from the book on the J-26 Mustang (J-26 was the Swedish designation for the P-51) by Leif Hellstrom. Btw, he says the 26158 was registered as yellow K, not green K.

oh, and John, you keep talking about the Swiss AF, but it was of course the Swedish AF.

finally, I found this too:

Thank you Jan Kees!

And I love that pic of 'Tear! For a long time, that was the only photo known to exist of the aircraft. It was only a couple of years ago, when the left-side photo surfaced. There is also a photo of Hubert Davis standing next to a 78th FG Mustang, but there doesn't seem to be enough to prove that it is 'Tear or not.

Martin, I'm sorry for the miss-understanding. When you initially asked about Swiss-markings, I thought you were refering to the Swedish markings that this aircraft carried. This particular aircraft never flew with the Swiss AF, so there won't be any repaints, for this aircraft in particular, in Swiss AF markings. However, I still would like to do a few Swiss AF examples (especially as one of the surviving Swiss AF museum examples, which has never been restored, was one of the big sources of accurate source material for the production of the Warbirdsim Mustangs).
