DC-8 Takeoff in 2800' SEABOARD WORLD AIRLINES

MARBLE MOUNTAIN....VIET NAM 1969 (from an Army friend)

Those of us in country in 1969 will remember this incident well. This
DC-8 charter was cleared to land at DaNang International at night. The
crew mis-identified Marble Mountain Army airfield as DaNang which is way too short for large aircraft. Getting that loaded slug down and stopped at nite must have made that pilots seat cushion disppear forever!! All recommendations were to disassemble the aircraft and ship it home but as you see this behemoth got off the ground in 2800 feet with very little fuel aboard and landed at DaNang International a few scant miles away.

This from a guy that worked at Trans International Airlines. This
event is pretty well know history among the "Non Sked" flight crews
flying the MAC charters in and out of Viet Nam but I had no idea it
had been filmed. What's interesting is, once Seaboard World Flight
Operations got the word on what happened, they contacted Douglas Aircraft Corp for advice...Douglas said "take it apart and ship it home". FAA said the same thing..........you can see from this footage how the flight crew handled the matter.

Enjoy a little history.

I'm sure a chorus of "Holy sh*t!" rose from the audience along the runway as he rotated and got airborne. I said it myself while watching the vid. :d

Marble Mountain AAF

Isn't that a hoot. Who would've figured a DC 8 was a STOL aircraft?

I flew out of both the Da Nang USAF airfield and the Army's Marble Mountain airfield back in the day with the air cav. There was a great beach adjacent the Marble Mountain airfield with wonderfully clean sand and water. We called it Red Beach, but I have no idea what its true name was/is.

I'll be honest here. I only clicked the link because it said "Wayward DC-8 accidentally lands" and I thought This Should Be Good!... turns out it was.

China Beach

sbp..........

sbp is right on this one . There is a Red Beach I believe to the North West of Danang . I've been to China Beach and suffered many a hangover there . I won't mention anything about " Dog Patch " here .
That's a whole different story and all the guilty parties out there know what I'm talking about . I don't want to get anybody in trouble .

China Beach

Thanks for getting me squared away!

The beach was no doubt the reson d'etre for the sobriquet of the TV series "China Beach." Never did watch that show, but it was about a hospital in VN. Must have been the one in Da Nang.
