There was more than a little irony in my comment.
English doesn't really differentiate between cause and reason:
cause (REASON)
noun
1 [C or U] the reason why something, especially something bad, happens:
reason (EXPLANATION)

the cause of an event or situation or something which provides an excuse or explanation:
But if you're looking for an explanation of the madness that descended on the world in 1914, it would have to be that the European aristocracy, as usual, had its head up its collective ass. We could chat for hours, better with a glass of adult brew in hand, about those issues.
