• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

What are you using to unzip files?

Some downloads (like fs global 2010) come in multiple files because of the size, PILOTsFSG2010FTX.zip, .z01, ... , .z05.
Not all unzip programs will do the assembly and then unzip. I used WINRAR trial version as suggested below.

The following note is on the flightsimstore/fsglobal2010 download page:

Important Information:

To unzip the file, please use WINRAR or WINZIP (7ZIP and internal unzipper do NOT work). You can at any time download and install a free trial version of these and uninstall later.

I guess I must be missing something here, but what exactly do all these zip programs do then (err... apart from zip that is), that good ole Windows7 doesn't? I recently repacked and rezipped my entire FSX addon collection. Payware and freeware, that's about 880Gbs worth of files. Windows7 seemed to do it fine, but with high number of people using Winrar etc, there's obviously something I'm not understanding???

Better compression algorithms resulting in smaller filesizes.

There are only three things Microsoft did, and none of them very well: build an operating system, build Office and build Flight Simulator.

All other things are better left to specialized developers.

The only thing they ever excelled in was market the stuff above :)

So why aren't you using Linux/iOS, Openoffice/whateverIOSuses and X-Plane then?

Windows 7 will open zip files and make zip files but the utilities mentioned do it quicker, will span multiple disks (for DVD backups), will read spanned zip files (see Paul Anderson's post), some can view files without unzipping them (WinZip Pro, dunno about the rest) and encrypt/password protect zip files.

I used Windows to make some zip files once and burn them to a CD. I was on holiday at the time which was fortunate; it meant I didn't need the job done at all quickly... :banghead:
