What is best Graphics card for FSX?

Well guys...I don't think one over the other is better...just what you like...After all , FSX is run by the Processer not the vid card...

My rig does great for FSX.....5 years????
Just picked this reply but more people posted something similar. Don't be fooled. If you run enhancements like the HD clouds and highrez groundtextures or highrez textures on your plane etc you do need a solid graphics card to get a smooth performance.

Some people make it sound like you could still run the show with an old Voodoo Banshee card!:woot:;)

I have no idea why people are having trouble with ATI cards. Even Tom's Hardware, which I have no respect for anyway, shows much lower fps with ATI cards. This is a curious issue. There are several here in the forum I have built for and they have not reported problems with their ATI cards being slow. I sell both ATI and Nvidia so I am not dissing either one. The both have thier good qualities but I feel ATI gets a raw deal from myths or inexperienced users spread about it .

I have been having some severe physical problems but my curiosity over-ruled my common sense and I ran some more tests shots yesterday with the HIS HD4850 ICE-Q4 on my wife's Gigabyte E45 UD3P MB, E6850 GO stepping core @4.2GHz, 4GB DDR2 1066 Corsair Dominator RAM. I used the A2A P-47 going through LOTS of CLOUDS to see if it really was less than the GTX XFX 26...guess what? The Hd4850 was equally fast (38fps consistantly)and rendered beautifully. At TechCorp and we test every hardware item for speed and durability and some of the ATI cards run just as well as their counterpart in FSX.

These pics are from yesterday. I also ran some in NY city a couple of months back and posted them if more proof is needed on the same rig and the lowest fps I got was 32 in a driving rain with tons of clouds all settings were full right except autogen on very dense over Manhattan.

These are the Manhattan ones I took on 8-30-08 in sequence on the same same low end rig with the HIS ICE-Q4 Turbo HD4850. These are un-retouched and I believe I posted these under another catagory. I set the target lock at 34 and that is where it stayed.

Beautiful shots Txnetcop...Thanks for the ATI vote of confidence...:applause:

Regardless of fps (while never having issues with ATI either) I think ATI looks much better than NVidia.
Don't know, it looks to me as if Nvidia has some simplified anti-aliasing algorithms or something, I never get the same quality out of an NVidia card that I get from ATI.

Yep, I noticed an image quality increase with my ATI cards, yet the best thing is that, leaving the cloud troubles aside, the ride on a vanilla FSX SP1 installed on an undefragged harddrive ist one hell of a lot smoother than it used to be on my 8800GTS.

I think I'll keep the 4850 in the case for now.

I think you will find that if you install SP2, and it all sits on the OS drive with FSX your smoothness will go away..

I just moved FSX off my OS drive and now can run Acceleration, before I could not at all when it was on my OS drive

For the hell of it I changed the fiber frame setting from 33 to 20 and got rid of my occasional stutters especially with the heavy hitters. I really cannot even see a difference in quality on my 34 inch lcd.. Also lowered my native 1920 res down into the 1400 range and that got rid of some bumps and some graphics oddities. After tweeking since the days of dos Microprose f-119 stealth fighter, I think my fiddling endlesly with settings and hardware are about done.:amen:
Ive got 4 cards right here and the ATI does look cleaner but are slower in clouds no doubt. Ok, IMO. Done swapping and reloading drivers. Back to whats it supposed to be about. Flying
I am glad I love helis and bush flying. You airline guys and jet jocks have a uphill battle against FSX.

FSX sits on a different partition, but on the same physical drive.

Hmmmmm I got nothing for that.....It might be the same though, as its still accessing the OS..but I don't know if thats what help changing drives with FSX...But it might be...:faint:

I have the ATI 3870X2 OC'd to run my FSX rig and I'm love the crispness and sharpness!! I'm running in the 12-17 fps range but it doesn't stutter. I have a ton of addons; mesh, ai traffic, landclass, etc and my traffic settings are at 75%.

I don't believe you can make the statement that ATI cards are "bad" in FSX and NVIDIA cards are "good" or "better". That's an overgeneralization!

I'm also tired of tweaking so I'm flying!!! :woot:

I have no loyality to none. Nvidia ruled the video card world for years. I was so sick of Nvidias crappy drivers, the black boxes, flashing runways, lack of aa/af,CTDs,the infamous menu crashes and on and on and on........ When I heard ATI was back in the game with the 4850 I ripped out that 8800gt and slapped in that ATI so fast your head would spin. I was so glad Nvidia had some real competition and all my problems were solved.
WRONG
Most of the problems I was having are still there except for the menu crashes. As I said IMO ATI looks cleaner but in heavy weather,Nvidia eeks out better perfomance. I still have my 4870 installed and no plans to upgrade it or my computer. ATI getting back in the tech race brought down the prices for all cards. In some cases,Nvidias fell by 1/2. So now I spend that upgrade fever money on scenery, planes and helis. Buying the latest, greatest card, proc, ram and watching the price 1/2 in 3 months has gotten old also. I am at peace with FSX. Blurries be dammed ,stutters, smutters. I also stopped watching the fps readout cold turkey:friday: Try it. It want kill you. Just leave it off.

JIMJAM...Surely if you turn off the frames counter you MUST fall over dead....LOL :jump:

Smoking ha,drinking, deep fried anything, nah, Easy women,well....... All nothing compared to the withdrawals of the dreaded FPS COUNTER:help:
Other signs of sickness. Constantly going back and forth betreen exiting FSX,editing fs.cfg and restarting over and over and over. You have not left the same airport in weeks cause you are using it as a baseline for your tweeks.
If you reinstall your os once a week. If you spend 3 hours doing a simple vid driver update. If You have drool running down your lip and consider Newegg porno. If so seek help.
Or do what I did. Buy X-plane and DO NOT fly FSX for one WEEK. 2 is even better. Then, fly FSX. You will see FSX in a whole new light and realize the slight graphics glitches, slowdowns, stutters really are not that big a deal.

Guys I have found in all the FSX setups almost all stutters were from either a bad load of FSX, (yes I too have had to do it over a few times for whatever reason) or computer processes. bad hardware setup, bad BIOS setup, or software that would not allow FSX to run properly. Certain video drivers that work fine for others give you nothing but headaches in FSX. There are some anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that make FSX stutter. Certain scenery, freeware and payware, make FSX stutter. Certain aircraft can bring FSX to its knees on weaker systems.

Best advice I have ever heard concerning FSX:
You will have to learn to see FSX like desirable woman who is demanding and picky about where you take her, and even pickier about what you give her...sounds like my ex. It's true though. Once you get it right, guard it jealously and be careful of what you add or do to change what was once just almost perfect, and for Pete's sake, once you have tamed her, turn that damn fps counter off and enjoy the ride.

Ted
