What Is The Quick Combat Altitude Setting Controlled By?

MajorMagee

SOH-CM-2022
I have many installations of CFS3 that work properly, but I have one that refuses to let me start in Quick Combat at any altitude other than Runway and 14,278 ft (4352 m). I can select other altitude options in the Location Dialog (i,e, 2500 ft, 5000 ft, etc.) but other than Runway they all end up being 14,278 in game. I've tried to go into the AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/CFS3/Missions/mission.xml file and edit the altitude there but the game just overwrites it with the dreaded 4352 each time before the mission starts.

Does anyone know what xml or txt file is being used by the game for the location dialog where you select the starting altitude or what actually sets the altitude value as it writes the AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/CFS3/Missions/mission.xml file?

Well, I know that this is not normal because it doesn't happen in any of my other installs, but in this case the 4352 was lurking down at the bottom of the player aircraft xpd file as CruiseAlt ="4352". Changing that changes the Quick Combat Starting Altitude. Go figure.

Hi MajorMagee

Well thats a wierd one to start 2014 on! Changing the xdp figure would only affect one aircraft though? And how that has any influence on the QC altitude value is anyone's guess. I was tinkering with the _mission.xml file last year, but largely to influence skill levels for campaign missions. But there was a thread where someone used my method to influence the starting location for missions where the runway was too short for the campaign flight to take off from. however QC mode is different again. One of the files that influences starting QC parameters is the uisel.xml file, and you could try editing the altitude parameter in that file. You haven't made the uisel file read only, perchance?

Yes, in this one install the QC starting altitude can only be changed by hand editing the player aircraft xpd file. In all my other installs it works as expected by choosing it from the list in the Location Dialog window.

No, uisel.xml is not read only, and it doesn't include any Altitude parameters as one would expect it to. I tried adding one by hand, but without knowing the proper format it was just an ineffective guess as to what to put in.

Hi MajorMagee,

Have you tried deleteing the uisel file and the mission file in the application data folder.

regards Rob.

Oh, well, that was my best guess. Perhaps in selecting QC parameters, the altitude is written into the mission.xml file? But you've already tried to edit the mission.xml file so its got me stumped. :dizzy:
