i recently installed a mission i dound on avsim called "mercenary rescue mission".

when i started it up, the atc box immediately came up and told me i needed to install something called the "sim var extension", and then restart fsx.
the other option said
"nah, i'm to busy to bother with xml, so frapp off"

i clicked # 2 and got the failed mission thing.

can someone tell me what the sim var extension is, and where does it go?

what is xml?

XML is a code language that is used extensively in FSX.

As for the messages, can't help with that, but if I had a d/l that gave me the wording in the second message, I would be wary of having it installed.

Hi Folks

Paul -
No need to worry. :icon_lol:

SimVar.exe is harmless.

Its a mission extension written by Jim Keir,
and bundled with his FS-Addon FSX Mission Editor product.

Think FSUIPC, but for FSX missions.
Yes it's similarly powerful,
and now used by many mission developers.

Intended to be placed in an FSX sub-folder called Extensions.
(Should be in the readme).

The mission Mercenary Rescue
was created by Jim as a technology demonstrator.
The mission won't work without it.

Missions are written in XML, (Extensible Markup Language).
They can then be compiled into an .SPB file, which runs faster.
