What is up with Joe Binka's Widgeon?

While I don't, and probably won't, spend a great deal of time flying the inline powered Widgeon's due to the lack of a VC, I will do what can to improve them as much as I can. Sound packs, eventually some new skins, a new 2D panel setup (and possibly a new 2D panel bmp).

I took the Super Widgeon, using MaddogK's attached files, up for a spin last night...and used the tweaked Baron 58 sound package....SWEET! Really gives the plane the sound of having two hot rod 6-cylinder opposed engines.

Will work on the twin Ranger sound pack this weekend, along with a few other sound packs that I have near to completion. Look forward to several new sound packs being uploaded in the week to come.

Tim

I loaded up the Binka Widgeon after work. Right off the get go (after starting the engines) they wanted to die. I increased the throttle a bit to resolve. A minor tweak to the .cfg will take care of that. While taxiing, slowing mainly. The plane wants to nose over when brakes are applied. It's almost unavoidable.

I also installed MaddogK's files. The Widgeon seems to fly fine. Though I can't see from 2D or VC at all. Just a few gauges on a black background. I'll read more through this thread to see if anyone mentioned any edits.:kilroy:

well... I've shredded this plane and was pretty sure I reassembled it with the stock panel intact (with a couple small gauge additions- NOT replacements). IIRC it does tend to nose over during quick accelerations- my guess is the increased engine output, but I never messed with Joes original braking settings, and during landing full back on the stick counteracts the nose-over when braking (pretty much). To my knowledge there was NO VC on the inline model- Thats what my modded files were applied to, at least I never noticed as I rarely fly in the VC. I also seem to remember using some files from an update pack, I'll take a look and see what I used and let you know.

As I said earlier, I had no intention of ever releasing these files, I posted them to help Obio get the overheating under control but I guess if enough peeps are interested I can polish them up for a 'official' release of some sort.

Oleboy- you may want to keep you're panel if youre having issues with mine, I suppose I could zip and post the entire panel, but I'll need Joe Binkas permission as I basically added a couple things, and moved other stuff around- all from his original panel.

Yes, I just tried replacing the original panel. I still can't see out the glass. It's ike the panel takes up the whole screen with black around the outsides. Nice plane otherwise. Is Joe Binka even still around? I don't recall if I ever emailed him when I was doing all the Wilga repaints :kilroy:

...Is Joe Binka even still around? ... :kilroy:

I don't think so. Last I knew, which was some time ago, Joe had dropped out of the FS hobby and didn't expect to get back into it.

There were a couple reasons. One was that he had some very annoying situations with people not respecting his rights to his work, like when he let somebody in Poland have a beta copy of the Wilga and they released it to the public without his permission. Then he got a lot of grief from someone who didn't like one of the passengers in one of his planes - I think it was the Wilga again. Then he had his major hard drive crash and for the second time lost gazillions of hours of work. Between all those things he got pretty burnt out and announced his retirement from the hobby.

That's a shame as Joe has a great talent for making some incredible aircraft.

Also he had the makings for a beautiful Cessna 185 that I was hoping would be completed for FS2004.

It's sad that we've lost another great guy.

Pete.

but if you need some inspiration for the Super Widge.... here's one all finished :icon_lol:

Very nice indeed, but unfortunately without the source we'll never get those 3 bladed props on the inline model (that was my stumbling block).

OK. Due to all of this posting and files etc... I have the Widgeon w/ 450 hp pratts running good. Just have to watch the cyl hd temp. Doubled up OBIO's r-195 sounds as well. Need to make it a real 2 engine sound pack. Later. NOW, how do I sharpen up the lettering in the vc? I wasn't able to find the bitmap. Remember, I am fuctionally braindead. Any help would be appreciated. I started with Binkas' 450 hp widge.

Firstly, I am attaching a sound.cfg.txt file. This file, when renamed to remove the .txt, will be a twin eingine config file for the Beaver/R-985 sound pack I uploaded. Just save the attachment to your computer, rename it to remove the .txt, make a copy of the Beaver/R-985 sound pack, drop the new sound.cfg file in place and you are set.

Totally kool. Now how do I sharpen up th vc bitmap so I can see what the toggle switches toggle. The vc looks like my world before I put my contacts on in the morning.

The original radial version of the G44, with the VC and overheating radial, is still available at avsim, search for widgeon_radial.zip.

Wim

Nice pair of radials there! . . . ahem!

Joe's original visual model is very good indeed.

OBIO, I continue like you to tweak and experiment and just when I think I have the engine cut off issue cured, BANG the engines quit and the plane drops out of the sky.

Were you going to package up (am using the PWradial re-release version by M Verlin with his update air.cfg and fde - like you, I believe, at the moment) your "best" mods and upload them here? I have so many different versions of the package and bits and bobs of updates it's hard to keep track of wha'ts what!

I will upload the tweaked panel for the VC-only Radial powered Widgeon. I haven't done a thing to the flight dynamics...simply replaced every stinking gauge on the VC seemed to remove the over heating issue. The gauges are the stock F6F and P-38 gauges...so they aren't the prettiest gauges in the world...but they allow me to fly the Widgeon like a madman without the engines shutting down. There are a few gauges that may not be stock, so I will have to include them...the DC player gauge and one other.

Oh, and I found out what I was not able to open the cowl flaps using my keyboard commands...sort of. I had the cowl flaps set to open using Control Shift V....but the sim will not recognize that combination for some reason...on any plane. So I reset the assignement to Shift C and it works. Now I can open and close the cowl flaps using the keyboard or the handly cowl flap levers on the overhead panel.

I am using the G44_20.zip package and the G44upd.zip package. Again, I have not changed a thing in the aircraft config or air file...simply regauged the VC with non-XLM gauges....the over heating is GONE!

OBIO

Glad to hear you solved it. I seemed to have as well, not sure where or how. Logging a lot of hours now around the Caribbean and PNW etc. Setting up an ILS landing as a write this at Ft Pierce FL. What a nice plane. Very good of you to share your reworked panel. Question: is there a prop rpm control on this? If so I can't find it or a gauge that shows prop rpm.

ON the tweaked panel, I put in a complete engine control pop up. Main engine gauges, throttle quadrant (throttle, prop, mixture). Sometimes I find it easier to use a pop up for such thing than trying to use my right hand to fly the plane and mouse some VC levers.

OBIO

Been playing in the paint shop! How are you putting together the 450hp per PW engine version? Are you taking the air.cfg data from the Bill Lyons Goose? What about the airfile data?
