What signals the New Year where you live?

Seeing as it's New Year's Eve I just got to thinking about this.

In the UK the New Year is signalled by the chiming of the largest bell in Westminster Tower, known the world over as 'Big Ben' (incidentally the bell is known as 'Big Ben' and not the tower as many people seem to think).

For the eastern side of North America it's signalled by the dropping of a left-over 70's disco ball on the top of some large building or other (I have no idea why).

So what signals the New Year in your part of the world?

Here in Washington State, fireworks are shot from the Space Needle at the New Year.

Of course in the many neighborhoods of the area, people launch and shoot off their own fireworks displays. I'm sure that many thousands of dollars are exploded in celebration of the New Year. When the kids were younger, we spent princely sums on the pyrotechnic devices and had a ball.

When I go outside and light these M-80's I've been saving, mayhaps even fire a couple rounds into a berm in our field!!!

At the moment I would say the drunken, laughing crowd next door:icon_lol: When they hit the street to dig into firecrackers it should be New Year...

The wife cooks up black-eyed peas with ham hocks (southern US tradition) and she beats on an old pot at the stroke of midnight (Philippine tradition).
The Vietnamese folks down the street set off a whole bunch of fireworks, I know that's Vietnamese tradition and in their case also "drunk neighbor" tradition.

Hey All,

calendar and a clock

Far too conventional. Around here it is signaled by someone on the street behind me trying to blow off a finger or two with fire crackers. Fire works are highly illegal in my area, so it tends to get real quiet when a police or EMS siren is heard. Then I can go back to sleep.

Usually when I stop writing the year it was to the year it is now.

:bump:

Yep, same here but it could take me a month or two to switch up one year. ;) I blame it on...... "I just washed my hands and can't do a thing with em."

And I also do the same as Terry. ;)

Since I stopped drinking years ago, for the most part, I usually bring in the new year asleep and snooring....LOL

Before that I was ususlly nursing a hangover from the night before...:pop4:

Seeing everyone kissing while I am by myself shrugging...

new twist... this year with fever and shivers. :isadizzy:

Going to go into hiding on decade New Year's celebrations from now on.:kilroy:

You left out the neighborhood idiot firing his gun in the air :pop4:

Straight up is just as deadly if it comes down on you. Several years ago some one here was killed by an idiot shooting up in the air. People forget that when the bullet hits the ground it's going as fast as it did leaving the gun...
