What's the current wisdom regarding AI traffic?

I might have posted something about this awhile back but I'm not sure. I think my memory is slipping these days but I keep forgetting to look into it.

What is everyone using for AI traffic these days? I think there is:

  • My Traffic X
  • Traffic X
  • Ultimate Traffic
  • World of AI
Not sure of any others offhand. I was looking into this end of things some time ago and ended up just plugging in a bunch of WoAI packages and forgetting about it. My main concern was frame rate, but now that I've got a decent overclock happening I'm contemplating revisiting my traffic. WoAI seems to do the job well enough, but what will some of the payware offerings get me that I'm not already getting in WoAI? How frame rate friendly are they in comparison to each other also.

Thanks

JustFlight's TrafficX is currently the only package that does pure FSX models. MyTrafficX does masses of airlines, but some of the models are FS9 mdls, some are FSX and it doesn't pretend to be realistic - it's "area" based so you'll get British Airways jets in the UK, Lufthansa in Germany, UAL, Delta, etc. in the US but not at their own real world hubs and bases.

So far there are zero, not one, freeware options for pure FSX traffic. If you want free, you get FS9 MDL files.

After waiting way too long to try FSX - and quickly finding I am flying only FSX 99% of the time - I only last week got around to setting up some AI.

I have never gone for the big packages but instead like designing my own custom AI "environments." As I prefer GA and military - not so much the tube scene - this works great as you can build AI traffic to suit a particular air base or airport just with what you want.

Having used TTools and AFCAD in FS9 successfully to build my own traffic - including traffic on aircraft carriers and working floatplanes on water runways - I found the path of least resistance was to:

1. Get Airport Design Editor (freeware) - basically AFCAD for FSX
2. Get the FS9FSX converter - also freeware
3. Make up your traffic.bgl as in FS9 with TTools, convert using the converter, drop it in the usual folder, and bingo, working traffic.
4. NB: don't add an FS9 traffic.bgl to FSX - it will apparently disable the default FSX traffic. :faint:The method above doesn't affect the default traffic.

As far as payware , I like MytrafficX best....

its the only one that has a tool included to keep the Default traffic too...

Not the best models up close..But fairly easy on frames and plenty to see...

It's funny but after spending weeks and weeks customising Ultimate Traffic in FS9, substituting the GA with all of my addons and importing countless custom traffic files for my favourite local airports I haven't used an AI traffic program for FSX at all and really don't miss it. And apart from cars, boats and birds I've turned the traffic slider right down too.
It's just me and the angels up there these days :engel016:

I used to fly with no traffic also, since I hated hearing "Orbit airlines" and such but I really like having some real world stuff in there. I'm quite content with WoAI so I guess maybe I shouldn't mess with it, but all these payware options are intriguing and as an FSX user I have a natural ability to never leave well enough alone.

My biggest concern is frame rates, I guess having true FSX aircraft as AI is better and all so Traffic X sounds appealing and I like the sound of some of it's other features I've been reading about. Still I don't want to lose all my GA traffic either. Argh.

Still undecided.

If you want the best frame rates, I guess Traffix X will be the best option as they are pure FSX aircraft (not used it, so I only "guess !!!). If you want the best visual planes, WOAI is the way to go, and that's my choice living on a single core rig. Still got adequate frame rates and enjoy close up detail on the AI around airports. I've also got lots of other addons in there too, some home made, some MAIW, some others. All freeware. I used to run MyTraffic X, but close up, they were not my up of tea (not a critisism as they are designed that way to improve FPS).

TrafficX removes the default traffic .bgl, but it doesn't get rid of the default traffic per say. When it compiles, it adds randomized GA traffic using the default aircraft. If you have additional repaints installed, it will add them, too. It even adds the default Beaver and ultralight trike. TrafficX also has some handy tools that make it easy to add or remove aircraft from it's .bgl, (which is handy since it's annoying to see Beaver floatplanes stuck on the runways they just landed on.)

Iam using Traffic X combined with WOAI packages. As I am flying in the Dx9 mode, they work fine, too. I needed WOAI packages for some smaller airlines which are not represented well in the Traffic X. The WOAI plans have been converted to FSX standad.
