What've I missed in the last 13 years (and how to catch up?)

Hi all, I used to make aircraft for CFS1 and CFS2 way back in the day. After a long absence, I'd like to try and get back into playing these old games. However, I'm just wondering... what essential mods/ etc. have I missed out on over all these years? What are the "must haves" these days? How does one easily get CFS3 and/or CFS2 working on a Windows 8 machine? (or windows 10 in case I ever upgrade). Are there any other worthy WWII (or WWI) flight sims out there that have come out in all this time? Are there any other active sites still left with forums/downloads?

Basically, if you were starting from scratch, what would you do? The simpler and more straightforward the better, as I'm not really looking for spending hours to get the game up and running.

Thanks in advance for all your help! and sorry for the duplicate thread from the CFS3 forum

If I were you (but who am I?? :)) I would look for a good second hand Windows XP-PC with enough RAM (8GB) as a stand alone for playing "old" flightsims and other ones (subsims, trainsims, etc.). That will safe you from a lot of trouble with the newer Windows versions, especially WinX. Only use your Internet connection for safe downloads and Microsoft updates (yes, there are still updates made for XP by Microsoft).

And a great "patch" for CFS3 is the WW1 Wings over Flanders Fields, absolutely value for your money. And on SimV and SoH you'll find all kind of uploads for CFS1 & 2, still great fun to fly. If you need help, send me a PM and I'll do my best.

Happy flying and safe landings,

hertzie.

PZL_Eric,

This thread has been too quiet, so I'll jump in. If you're looking for simple and easy to get your feet wet, stick to the Pacific for now. I'd recommend a couple of campaigns by Captain Kurt to get your feet wet.

By the way, if you are affiliated with the old Fall Weiss / Poland 1939 website, we have a completely overhauled and updated auto-installer of that done by yours truly, which includes a whole new series of Polish aircraft by Baldy and UncleTgt, as well as new airbases and loads of GSL scenery. :wiggle:

Here are a couple of suggestions...

Marine Fighting Squadron VMF 121, Part I: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=44&id=21818

Marine Fighting Squadron VMF 121, Part II: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=44&id=21837

9th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=44&id=2561

Welcome Back, and good luck with the update. I still use an XP SP3 machine for older games and sims and it works great But i may try my hand at trying my 2008 install of CFS2 on Win8, i refuse to to to 10 but 8 works fine for many things including MSTS train sim and other sims I work with.

good luck and it is good to see old hands returning to duty. :)
