If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

When is it time to build a new computer?

The time is never actually because by the time you get the "supercomputer" built it'll be obsolete ...

So you're just going to have to decide to bite the bullet and build with what you can and hope it stays current for a while ...

Unless of course you're MOE ... and have his wife's pocketbook ... seems he's buying new puter stuff every week.

Or if you're like me and keep your computers until they fall apart. My current one is going on 8 years old.

I just clicked on "New Computer?" in KD's first post...its a link...hasnt anyone noticed? sheesh...lol

Hi,

Methinks the author is commenting very slightly tongue-in-cheek !

The simple answer to the question asked is - when you can afford it. This can vary tremendously, from "every 6 months" in the case of your average American student/schoolkid, to "several years" in the case of normal people with wives, kids, mortgages etc.

If you check Kilo Delta's Profile you will see that he "hasn't made any friends yet". Draw your own conclusions .....

Sheesh.....click the link in my original post :icon_lol:

I don't generally make it a habit of mousing over all the text in the forums in hopes of finding a link ...

Most posters who put links up at least leave some indication that there is a link associated with their post.

Alistairs point of 'affordability' is a good one. If we had our own ways, we would all have liquid cooled, fusion powered, octo-quad systems that could run FSX at flull sliders, full frame rates.

But no....

The time to get a new computer is either, when our present one breaks down, or when we can afford the next jump up.

I know thats how it stands with me.

Meaning what, Alastair?

Hi KL,

Meaning only that those suggesting that roomfulls of hugely expensive Server racks are the minimum needed to run the sim might find that not everyone agrees with him .....

It was a jovial response made in the same spirit as your linked article. No offense was meant .....

Cheers,

Alastair

I am an "average American student", and am using the same 5 year old HP laptop piece of crap without a working dvd drive, and I resent your statement. I guess I couldn't "afford a new one every 6 months". The rest of my generation may not be able to say the same, but that doesnt give you the right. All english people are purple. i can make absurd statements too. I am sure there are plenty of 40 year olds who are spending beyond their means as well. I dont mean any offense or to start any kind of flamefest, but one of the biggest, albeit small, problems with this forum (that I see) is you guys ganging up on us youngins, mostly i assume, cuz there arent too many of us to defend ourselves. We're not all that bad, and we're gonna be taking care of you gents in the future! :engel016: So you think anyhow hehehe:icon29:
