I am seriously looking at jumping into P3D. I turn 60 next month, my second retirement kicks in, so I hope I will have some extra cash. My question is which option to go with, the Pro or Academic ? I am open to suggestions or opinions.

Academic indeed, unless you plan to use P3D professionnaly and generate money out of it.
Also, be aware that the discussions about P3D licences are not very welcome on most FS forums (I mean, discussion like "Am I really allowed to take the Academic ? ..." etc...). If you look around, you will probably notice that a lot of topics about this are often deleted or locked, to prevent useless arguments
PS: my last sentences sound more negative than I wished. Basically, it's perfectly fine to ask which licence you should get, but it's usually better to avoid the discussions about the legal aspects
