Which Program for VCs?

Hey everyone. After a few years away, I'm back to wanting to do some creating again for CFS2. It's still the best combat flight simulator around in my book, even after 8 years. Anyway, I specifically want to do some VC's for various aircraft already in the sim. Is FSDS from Abacus the best for that? Or do I need to take the plunge into GMAX? I don't mind spending $ for the former if end up using it alot.

Thanks

Hi Dan,
Good to hear someone else adding to the pot! :applause:

The only problem is that without the aircraft source files or you are VERY good with scasm :)isadizzy::costumes:), both requiring permissions etc etc, then you will be building stand-alone VCs!!??

If those are you intentions then best of luck!

If you intend 'inserting' your VCs into already built aircraft then it depends what the aircraft is built in FSDS or GMAX.

No doubt the cutters and shutters here will give you a better answer....

How ya doin', Shessi?

So, it's either build the whole aircraft or get permission for, then get the source files for the particular aircraft I'm wanting to insert a VC in? I guess I need to know if FSDS is alot easier (user friendly, etc), than GMAX, especially for cockpits. I've read that, in general, it is. Doing the whole plane will take some time, but I'm wanting to improve my experience with CFS2, therefore it'll be worth it.

Hello Gonzo27,
I am sure other designers will agree, but it takes me as much, if not more time to do a VC than the external model. Also for CFS2 if you don't have some of the external aircraft details in the VC model, they won't display. Like the wings or ailerons. So you may want to consider doing the whole aircraft, especially after learning to use one of the design programs, which is a task on it's own.

Hi Dan,
Doin fine, thanks. And yourself?

Hmmm, inserting a VC into a source file shouldn't(?!) be too hard. Most builders already put a VC in these days, even if it's basic. There may be some who would give you permission/source files to put you own VC into the model.
That would be the easier option.

There are only a few people capable of inserting a VC into a scasm'd mdl, me not included...dohhh!! You could learn but you may go mad in the process..:d

I've only messed around with FSDS, years ago, so couldn't comment either way. I'm sure the experts will swear positive about either FSDS or GMAX.

As for aircraft building the CFS2 greats include Thicko Haskel (Thicko), J.Lucariny, Laslo Becz, Bruno Escaravage (Brunosk), William Dickens (Bismarck13) et al. They would be able to give you a better advice.

Look forward to Gonzo Productions..

If you need help/info just shout!

Believe Thicko...

If you didn't design the entire aircraft, or are not (at the very least) in possession of the FSDS source file itself, creating a VC is not something that is practical.

Then you have to decide on a VC or DVC....a VC without working instruments, verses one with working instruments.

So what you really need to decide is whether you want to become a designer, or perhaps form a partnership with a designer who would like help doing VCs. :male:

Thanks guys for all your input. I'll probably in most cases just make the whole plane. I just ordered FSDS 3.5 and just have a couple more questions. Do I need to have FS2002 or FS9 to test the created planes prior to converting to CFS2 format? Lastly, what about creating DPs? I know there is a DP editor floating around, but how does one make a DP from scratch?

You've been a great help, Shessi. Got the DP editor. Thanks again, and now I'm off to start messin' with FSDS.

-ps. I knew I'd find help here. The CFS community has always been a great one. S!
