Why CFS 2?

tobob

Re-member
I have heard so many great things about CFS2 so I picked up a copy. I have used CFS3 for a while and I am confused why an older version is better. What makes CFS2 better than its successor?

What are some essential upgrades for a stock CFS2 install? I did a forum search and found a thread from 2008 but would appreciate an updated list if possible.

What are the scenery upgrades and why can't I download them? I keep getting errors when I try to download them. Specifically the LOD scenery files. They are quite large, are they worth the drive space?

I am also interested in creating models but not sure how specifically for CFS2. Are there any SDK s or tutorials specific to CFS2? Can I use Gmax or FSDS 3.5?

tobob if you are new to cfs2 take it slow and easy when adding to cfs2. I am leaving for work now so I can not give you any tips right now. :wavey:

I am somewhat familiar with fs2004 and CFS3, but CFS2 seems to a whole other world. I am still impressed with the amount of add ons for CFS2, apparently it is still a very active sim.

:USA-flag:It's nice to hear someone still has a job!!!!:USA-flag:

I'm sure you'll get plenty of answers from people who know a lot more than I do, but the reason CFS2 is my favourite (and yes, I've had CFS3, all of the IL-2's, Lock-on, Strike Fighters and more) is that you can do anything with it. The structure is very like FS2004, making it very easy to add and modify scenery, aircraft etc, unlike CFS3, and there's a huge range of both free and pay addons, and an army of helpful souls on this forum.

As Olaf1924 says, take it gently - fly a few stock PTO missions first and get into it.

You can cover everything from World War I to Korea in this sim. Some people are even working on a Vietnam set up. The diversity of airplanes is going to blow you mind. You can do here more then any other sim. Recently i have been using the mission builder to develop historic events like the dawning of the jet age on the carriers. with CFS2 you can fight World War II in every theater of action once you get the right addons. You can fly everything fighters, bombers, and even trainers.

heck you can even recrate the air battles from the Spanish Civil War.

You can fly from land bases or do what i love doing flying from the carriers....

Just take your time and don't try to learn everything at one time.

Foremost enjoy the sim world of CFS2. the 1930's, 40's and 50's kick butt in aviation history!

I even use this to come up with demonstrations for my students

I entered the Microsoft family of Flight Simulators with CFS3....and was never happy with that sim. It felt too much like an game and not enough like a simulator. And it was very restrictive in that it came with only a little chunk of the world.

When I bought CFS2 3 years later, I found out what a flight sim could and should be. Much more immersive, much more open feeling. Out of the box, CFS2 (like F2002 and FS2004) will give you the world....the mesh is there for the entire world (other than the exteme polar areas). Granted, the airports and such are only found in the Pacific Theater of Operations, but the mesh and textures are in place so that you can add an airport to Tahiti, France, Russia, China, Japan. And this single fact, that the entire world is in CFS2, has allowed the sim to be expanded far beyond what CFS3 could ever dream of being....CFS2 is a WW1 sim, WW2 Sim (all of WW2, Pacific, Europe, Eastern Front, CBI), Korean War, Vietnam War. Sure CFS3 has MAW and EAW, but those took a team of programmers and high end techies to produce. CFS2 is so easily modified...like FS2004. Planes are easy to add, easy to paint, easy to tweak. There is now a new world mesh by Rhumbafloppy that makes CFS2 look better than stock FS2004...I use the mesh in FS2004 to improve the look of that sim greatly.

There are, as you mentioned, a lot of add ons for CFS2...and more can be done and will be done. Because CFS2 shares a great deal of the same architecture of FS2000, FS2002 and FS2004, the planes have the same basic structure and with some work, planes from those flight sims can be brought into CFS2....were as CFS3 planes are built on their own architecture and planes from other sims can not be made to work in CFS3.

I tried downloading this mesh but it's not working. The server problem still haunts us. I will wait patiently for these to be fixed.

It's also very interesting that this can be used in fs2004. That is awesome! Can you put up a few screenshots of the mesh to help me pass the time while I wait? Maybe I will put it in my fs2004.

P.S. This is what I like about SOH. There is always a huge amount of supportive people ready to help even a moron like myself. It's not like this anywhere else. Cheers!!!!!

From the cheap seats:

Yo tobob;

Welcome to "the basement". :wavey:

The CFS2 download section has still not been made fully operational yet.
Be patient cuz their working as fast as they can.

Tobob first of all Welcome to our community. My first recommendation is for you to read this post from its first page to its last page. http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1117604819/all

Never install more than two or three new install at a time. Make a backup of you new CFS2 on a external Hardrive. So if you ever get in trouble you can go always to back to the hardrive install and restore everthing. This way you will not have to go back and reinstall everthing from strach once you have upgraded it sufficienly. Thats very time consuming and frustrating.

If you ever need help please come back here where the members of this community will help you along. No question is dumb. Not asking is dumb!

PS learn how to use the Mission Builder with its World wide map. Thats the Key to this Program.

What makes CFS2 so good?

first off, its doesn't take a super computer to run it. (But it doesn't hurt if you have a super computer)

You have a wide choice when it comes to aircraft. I currently have nearly 350 different aircraft types, and all from the WWII period.

You want Spits, we have um, 109s? We got that too. How about B-25s, yup. Tony's? Only the best.

The whole world is molded from the get go. And with Rhumba's mesh, and plenty of airfields to add-in you really can go from Fighting the German Horde in the Ost-Front, to taking on invading B-25's over Tokyo, to Defending Malta.

Not to mension the aircraft sounds are great, and did I say we have tons of Top notch aircraft to add-in like Dbolt'sCorsair upgrade, or FDG's B-17s, how about Bismark's Beaufighters?

c'mon down to the basement. It's cooler down here, and we have cookies!:bump:

We used to have rum as well, but Rami took of for Europe to get himself a case of swine flu and forgot to lock Dirtman up before leaving....and once Dirtman is left unsupervised in the Basement, the first thing he does is bust open the liquor cabinet and go for broke.

And here come's that old adage:

"The only stupid question is the unasked one!!!"

People down here are always willing to help out and guide you with sorting out any and all problems you may encounter with "The Senior Sim".

Welcome and enjoy yourself!

Hey Dirtman you know where i can find a US Navy marked Banshee? I have two good Panther, and so on, just would love a decent flying banshee to go with Korea install.

I think that he is also partying with the guys who are suposed to be fixing the downloads therefor slowing things up.:bump::blind::ernae::d

Thanks for the quick and helpful comments. I have started playing the missions and like the aircraft carrier take offs and landings. I did install the overhauled Hellcat and was pleasantly surprised!

I have one question: If this is the basement, what is the CFS1 forum called?
The Graveyard?

:ernae: Where do I get some of those cookies and rum?

Tobob please check your email.

I did, there isn't anything.

Now I know why, it's my old email. I went to change it to my new one in my profile and it was deemed banned by SOH?

I still have the old email active and I'll check it shortly.
