Wierd FSX issue....

I just built a new i7 system and am having a wierd issue (which is apparently not the new systems since everything I have thrown at it so far runs flawlessly...but who knows?).

When I run FSX in DX9 mode I get these wierd stutters where it runs at 60 fps (my refresh rate) then dips to about 9fps, then back to 60, then to about 9, etc.. etc......however, when I run in DX10 mode it is smooth as glass and exhibits no stutters.

Here are my Specs

Vista 64-bit SP1
Asus P6T Deluxe mobo
Core i7 920 @ 3.6
6GB G.Skill DDR3 1600
Evga GTX 280 SSC (latest drivers...tried the past 2 WHQL revisions as well).
SB X-FI Fatality
640GB WD "Black"
Dell 3007WFP-HC 30" LCD

FSX Settings

All settings maxed except:

Water at 2.X medium.
Mesh set to 10 (recommended by FSGenesis).
All air traffic set to 59%.
Airport scenery set to "Medium".
Sight Distance set to 60

Resolution: 2560x1600
FSAA: 8x
AF: 16x

Heat certainly isn't the issue.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

have you applied the latest DX update to your DirectX?

What you are describing sounds like it could be a driver issue too...

You might try lowering AA and AF by one,,and bring your resolution down some to test..say 1920 X 1200 ....Just to see...

What monitor are you using? And is that its native resolution?

Yep, I have the latest DX update.

Monitor is in specs listed above.

The thing is, with DX10 it is ultra-smooth with NO stutters. But DX9 is a different story.

It is not a performance issue. This new system chews up everything I have thrown at it so far. It only seems to occue in this game when using DX9 mode.

Missed the monitor specs...Sorry...That explains the high resolution....

Still though..If its sweet in DX10 mode(which brings some rigs to their knees) but stutters in DX9 mode...Then it has to be settings for the Sim and DX9.....

High AA or AF can get this to happen...Just try to lower the values and see..You may have to much on.... For DX9 that is......Also lock your frames down, not unlimited

As you say..Makes no sense..But worth a try......

I just tried it with FSAA and AF "Off" and it still yields the same result. It does the same thing at 1920x1200 and below as well.

I am at a loss here.

Kind of the same thing happening with me.

I'm running mine at 1900x1200, with a GeForce GTX 260, DirectX9 (windows xp 32 bit), with intel core 2 duo CPU, E8600 at 3.33 ghz and 4 gigs of ram

Sometimes it's smooth as pie, other times it jumps, like you said, from a very high frame rate, to around 9

If you haven't already, try running in DX10 mode. For me, it completely smooths everything out. DX10 seems to have it's own issues, but it sure is providing a boost in performance.

Have you tried locking your frame rate at ~30/40fps? I'm running the same resolution with same AA/AF and don't have any stutters.

Defrag your HDD and experiment with texture bandwith mult=xx parameter. It is described on various FSX tweak sites or even here.

It is here and can go from 30 -90...But 90 may be way high...A good start is 60-70...... Then go down or up as you see fit.....
