Windows 10/11 snafu / content thread

Okay, for clarity: I start the sim and (for example) I choose the Free Flight tab. There I select the tab to change aircraft. The window opens, nothing shows in the preview window and a few seconds later, the sim closes without warning and I'm back on desktop.

The same thing happens when I elect t fly the aircraft, already selected. I see myself on the runway and before I can start my engine, poof CTD. It also happens when I try to fly in Single Missions or if I try to start a mission in MB.

Hiede: 7 works fine as does 10. So far, 11 is a bust. That is a new 11 system, not an upgraded 10.

Next question is: does it also crash the same way when you DISABLE Hardware Acceleration in the Advanced graphics settings?
If the answer is NO (,but it looks like ****), then the issue is with graphics: directx/driver
If the answer is YES then I'm going to assume you're not running an unmolested CFS2, and there must be some add-on giving problems; could be a bitmap, mdl, gauge, module, ........ Easy to verify, if you have a Vanilla install lying around somewhere to compare. Otherwise you'd need to start disabling anything non-stock to find the culprit.

Just dumped CFS2 on a buddy's Win11 laptop that is almost like new install wise. Worked fine. The install was No CD patched and has been ran once on my PC before being thumb drive copied over. Got the DirectPlay install request and did it. Next was the CFS2 EULA. After went to Setting and saw Hardware Acceleration was on and could be turned off/on freely. Started Free Flight just fine.

Now wondering about if the problem is hardware manufacturer problem. My Win 10 is ADM CPU and GPU. The laptop is AMD APU (Ryzen 5) For my Win10 I don't recall ever installing any DirectX Legacy Runtimes but maybe Project 64, PCSX2 or Dolphin did for me? I don't see any thing DirectX installed in the Add/Remove Programs. Same for the Win11 Laptop.

Yeah; I just copied over the game files to a Win11 laptop with AMD Radeon GPU, and it ran without issue for me as well; no extra DirectX runtimes or DirectDrawCompat fix needed. My desktop PC with Nvidia GTX4090 needed at least the DirectDrawCompat, so maybe that's the clue.

I went back and found this post by Crich4251. Looks like Intel was no good for CFS2. Stuck at Overall image quality:1 with Hardware Acceleration ON or Overall image quality:6 but Hardware Acceleration OFF.

The only new thing from Overall image quality:1 to Overall image quality:2 is Aircraft Shadows are enabled as seen in game. Would have to check the CFS2.cfg to see if another thing is also enable but not shown in the Settings.

Allen ; it looks to me that you have hit the crux of my problem with this new computer and CFS2. I have the Lenovo with a Intell . Guess it is back to trying to get my old computer to do a Lazarus for me and come back from the dead.

Allen; To be totally truthful I have given up with this and am having some success in coaxing Lazarus to breathe and run. Just laborious shifting through all the old thumb drives and needed software. Next step is to try to visit a recycle store/show for a reasonably priced working one. I have some legacy software that Win11 doesn't like and I need to retrieve some other info off of the non-CFS2 drives.

I hope you do come back and try. It would be nice to know if Intel can made to work or not. If Intel are broke for sure going forward we may have to put up a note/thread about it.

Allen ; I am not totally quitting, not in my nature to do so. I meant given up for the time being at least, pending further developments. I, like many here, have some health commitments, my own and my walking conscience (wife,) that require attention first.

But also a Nvidia card right? I think the problem is with Intel integrated graphics/APU.

Yes, my desktop has NVidia and it works (with the DDrawCompat)
On my Lenovo T15 laptop with Intel graphics, it doesn't work.
On my Lenovo Yoga laptop with AMD Radeon graphics it works (without DDrawCompat)

I'm going to update the my old install guide with Win 11 info.

SdC. If possible could you confirm Crich4251 post about Intel working fine with Hardware Acceleration ON and Overall image quality:1 but crashing with Overall image quality:2 and above. If Overall image quality:2 dose crash can you try Overall image quality:2 than go into the advanced setting and turn the Aircraft shadows off as Aircraft shadows are the only new thing turned of when change from Overall image quality: from 1 to 2.

: Mine is Intel I7 with Intel integrated graphics. I've tried to run in FF in windowed mode with hardware acceleration turned on and off, and in a "virgin install," all with the same CTD results. I've dusted off my disks and will try it again with a fresh, unaltered install and se what happens. I will also contact my IT guy and ask if the Intel graphics can be replaced with or added to with an NVIDIA card. I'm running out of options, but I think Allen may have hit the nail of my problem on the head.

There is another plug in, dgVoodoo2. A few years ago it was tested (2022 with dgVoodoo2 2.79?). IIRC it wasn't good. I vaguely remember trying it and CFS2 won't load any textures so everything 3d looked like Microsoft Flight Simulator 3.0. I was able to get texture working but changing views would crash CFS2.

Installed the latest version of dgVoodoo2 and things are much better as I now have textures and chaining views isn't crashing CFS2 right away . Maybe this could be a fix for Intel PCs?

You can get dgVoodoo2 here https://github.com/dege-diosg/dgVoodoo2/releases Currently dgVoodoo2_83.zip.

Install.
Go into the dgVoodoo2_83.zip than MS folder now the x86 folder. Copy all 4 .dll files (D3D8.dll D3D9.dll D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll) and put them into the main CFS2 folder with the CFS2.exe Than back into the dgVoodoo2_83.zip for the dgVoodooCpl.exe and dgVoodoo.conf and put both into the main CFS2 folder. The both are used to change how the .dll work but I didn't need to change anything but you may have to. I have used this a bit for Rogue Squadron 3D, Boss Rally and Crimson Skies. So I can be of some help.

Next start CFS2. Go to Setting than Advanced Settings. Change the device from your normal graphics card to dgVoodoo Directx Wrapper. Next prayge and try flying.

dgVoodoo watermark can be disable in the settings but prob best to leave on while testing.

:ernaehrung004: The dgVoodoo2_83 actually worked for me about 30 mins ago in a Free Flight test in a virgin install! There were no issues when I changed views in 2D cockpit view or VC. I will try it in my larger working install and in that install's Mission Builder next.
:wavey:THANK YOU ALLEN! :applause:

I second Dirtman's post. That's a great effort by Allen & Sander, to pin down something so elusive.
This had the potential to make CFS2 a fond memory for those forced to transition to "newer (better???) Hardware/OS combos... I was worried WIN11 might finally break this old Sim.

UT: I too was worried about the fate of our sim. I tested my "working install" this morning and everything checked out fine. Even MB works now!

Thanks guys!!!

FYI - dgVoodoo2 updates

I just downloaded the latest release from the link in post 475, and the file is now at "dgVoodoo2_86_1.zip", which was released 3 days ago.

However, the site now also says that it was archived on Apr 18, 2025 which makes it read-only, so it is just possible that there will be no more updates.
