Windows 7 or 8

Some folks (but not all apparently) need to find/install the "vista" version of uiautomationcore.dll to prevent crashes when accessing menu bar in Win 7 x64.

windows 7 64bit here, ive had absolutly no problems with fsx (acceleration) on my end, i havnt had to install the file that scott mentioned, the only difference will be your directories.
 
No need to go to Windows 8 unless you have a touch screen monitor. The touch screen interface is Windows 8's big deal.
 
FSX works fine by default on both Windows 7 and Windows 8. As mentioned by Scott, making FSX use the UIAutomationCore.dll from Windows Vista may prevent some CTDs.
 
I recently upgraded to Windows 8, mainly because I get it free with my MSDN subscription and wanted to see what the fuss was. FSX works fine and TrackIR now has updated drivers that work with it. I'm not convinced that REX is starting when FSX starts and UT2 had problems installing.

To be honest there's no real need to go to anything beyond W7 64, although Windows 8 does start up quickly, but a lot of it is designed more for a touch screen table than for a desktop machine.
