Windows 7 problem?

Worthless

SOH-CM-2026
I've run XP for years and have no problems with CFS2. I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 and have just hit a wall. When adding Collin's new Ohio oilers and changing mdlnames text file, notepad won't allow changes to the text file. Everything looks normal until I hit SAVE, and then I get a big fat Access Denied box.

I still have my XP machine and I know I can fix this when I get home but I just wondered if anyone else was able to save notepad changes to CFS2 using Win7.

By the way, same thing happens when I alter the descrip.dat in INFO file.

Where did you install CFS2 ? I suspect that it was in one of the default "Program Files" folders. If so, then your problem is the good 'ole UAC, in which case there are two fixes - either disable UAC or reinstall CFS2 in a folder which is NOT a sub-folder of either of those "Program Files" (or preferably on another drive if available). For example, C:\CFS2 or D:\CFS2.

It may also be possible to edit the files by opening the editor with the option "run as administrator".

Hope that helps,
Ro

I have the same problem with Windows Vista, and another option is to cut and paste the file you want to change on the desktop in the first place, then to make & save your changes, then cut & paste the file back in its initial folder. I admit this may be boring if you have many changes to do :)

Go to Control Panel/User Accounts and turn off the User Account Controls (it will be a slider that you'll have to move to the bottom.) That will allow you to change the game files in Windows 7 and Vista.

OK Shadow Wolf was correct

I just had to shut down and start up again after changing the User setting. Looks like that fixed it. Many thanks SW. I'm sure this won't be the last conflict I encounter with Win7, but with all the talent at SOH I expect all will be resolved.

My CFS2 has never run better, then on W7 x64.
Had no problems, yet.
The User Control feature of W7, will deny manual editing of files without specific permission.

I run my PC only on Admin Account, still i had to select Properties by right clicking on my
CFS2 folder ( where i installed it ) and open the Security Tab.
Select Users(name-PC-users) and allow Full control.
I do this for all game Folders installed on my PC.
