Windows ME anti-virus

I am running a Windows ME System, but the AVG Anti-Virus 7.5.557 is not supported by the company any more. So does anyone know of a good anti-virus for Windows ME? I keep this system because it runs CFS2 so prefectly. thanks:medals:

I gave up on ME a couple years back and have not missed it one bit. XP runs CFS2 without a hitch. If you have an XP system, or system that will run XP, there is no reason to hang on to a dinosaur like ME.

I can't think of a sinlge anti-virus that is still supported for ME.

I am also a Windows ME hold-out. :icon_lol: I've been using Avast free edition for about six weeks now and it works pretty good. Has caught a couple of bugs I would've otherwise picked up from websites. Automatically updates without impacting what you're doing on the pooter.

I once lost a ton of sim work due to AVAST initiating an automatic update while I was moving some files from one folder to another in an attempt to better organize my HD. I lost every repaint template that I had done, every repaint that I had done...I had a portion of them backed up on CDs, but I lost probably a good 2 dozen repaint templates and maybe 4 times that many actual skins. I was just slightly irritated..ok, I cussed my computer out for a good 40 minutes and mooned it twice.

Since that day, I never allow any program do automatic anything...I update manually. Daily. But manually.

Yo Obi;

I remember that! It was a Sunday .... "The Night of 10,000 Profanities" & you emailed me while in a serious "panic mode".

We made 2 rules that night:
1) Manually update everything
2) copy; NOT move everything

Yo Marty;

A word of caution about Avast:
While I was testing the various Anti-virus softwares last year, Avast scored dead last.

But on the upside, I have a good friend whom is VERY knowledgeable of all things computer ..... he uses & swears by Avast.

Further: WinME is no longer supported by M$ so you don't get the regular updates and this alone puts you at high risk for infection.

You really should think about upgrading to at least WinXP. (which runs CFS2 as smooth as a baby's A$$)

When Vista was released I noticed the price of XP Pro dropped dramatically from about $190 CDN to $140 CDN (and later $120) but now with the cancellation of Vista & coming release of Win7; XP Pro is back up to $180

You should still be able to get XP Home for $105 CDN

Your info doesn't mention where you live. If in the US, remove aprx 20% from the quoted prices. Tiger Direct is in Kanada

For your consideration .....

I have several Dell GX270 desktops that have 3GHz chips, 1 GB RAM, video cards and run Windows XP Professional. I have FSX installed on one and I am about to put CFS2 in various configurations on a couple others.

I user Microsoft Security Essentials exclusively on ONE machine used for downloading only and it has NO Flight Sim of any kind installed. All downloaded files are scanned by the Microsoft anti-virus and, when cleared, are transferred to a USB Flash Dive and read into the appropriate machine. Desktops that have a Flight Sim on them are only connected to the internet (with Essentials installed) in order to get Windows/Driver Updates and that is about it.

So far, this has worked for me. I did it after I got a virus-embedded file for my FS2004 from someplace that killed that machine.

Hi all,
My opinion is this.
Do not use Win98 or WinME on a machine that is connected to the internet for any period of time, i.e, connected via ADSL broadband or whatever. Dial up is better If you must, but then then do not use it to do any banking, buying or do not store any sensitive data on it. These operating systems are just not secure any more (if they ever were).
A virus that kills your hardware or wipes your data might seem nasty but there is much worse out there.
The machine will be enslaved as a bot sending viagra emails for the russian mafia and you will not know. It will harvest your contacts and logon passwords and thus weaken the defenses of your friends and favorite forums.

ClamAV is the defacto antivirus for Debian linux and Ubuntu users, there is a version that runs on most versions of windows including 98 and ME. http://www.clamwin.com/
It is not one of those bloatware hogs that slows your PC to a crawl when you boot or start a program. But that means it is not fool proof. You must elect to scan a file or folder after you download it. It will not protect you from malicious script in websites. For that use a secure web browser,but I'm afraid I dont know if you can still get a version of Firefox or the like that runs on WinME.

If you want you and your friends to be safe from nasty stuff. Get a secure operating system straight away.
Ubuntu is great and completely free. You can set it up to dual boot your machine so you can keep WinME for playing your favorite Windows games. Use Ubuntu to safely browse the web and download what you like. Scan it for viruses and save it to a folder shared with windows then disconnect from the net and reboot to windows.
