Nice. Thanks to this thread a quick check showed that my updates had been quietly switched back to automatic, though luckily I can't say the offending KB was slated for assimilation. KB3035583 was the update that installed that persistent box encouraging you to reserve your copy of W10 that always came up. There are sites that describe how to uninstall it, basically just via control panel/programs, but it keeps coming back. Seems they've enhanced its potency since it first came out. Thanks again for the warning.
 
Thanks, Roman. I finally did a cut and paste to a text file. I'll give the search script a run next time I do updates.

At the moment I have kb3035583 uninstalled and hidden on both our machines, but I'm not sure it stayed that way on the wife's Win7 machine.
 
I can't seem to get rid of this nasty thing, KB2952664. Whenever I uninstall it, even though I have Windows Update set to notify me BEFORE downloading and installing, it comes right back after restarting the PC. I was able to get the other KB's in question into the "hold" queue in Windows update, and there is in fact a KB2952664 in that queue, but there is also one installed. When I remove it and then restart the PC, it comes right back.

Anyone else have this little issue?

For those having a hard time seeing if a certain windows update is installed I found this tip to help, open the command prompt (cmd.exe) in run as admin and then past the following line in the command window, just substitute the kb number with the one you are searching for. Follow the on screen prompts to remove. Hope this helps

I am still going to avoid or postpone any update to Windows 10 unless I get some clear answers on some of the problems encountered by others.

I keep coming across posts in other forums that talk about how Win10 screwed up FSX or FS9, and the user had to resort to a full reinstall or had to revert back to their prior OS.

If anyone comes across a clear process for upgrading from Win8.1 to Win10 without having to mess around with any reinstalls or searching for new drivers - let me know.

As for the wife's Win7 laptop, that's another matter. The wife is intimidated by computers in general and frustrates easily over MS Office products. Last thing I want is for a major change on her laptop and seeing her totally frustrated by the experience. Replacing her laptop with a better keyboard and preloaded with Win10 is what we're discussing now.

As for the change in MS policy on deploying Win10, I really don't trust them at this point. They said we can upgrade to Win10 for free within a year, then they sneak in those updates that begin upgrading if you're not paying attention. Anyone ever try and understand what each of those "optional" updates really do? The language is just as bad as my insurance policies.

My wife tried W10 & didn't like it because some of her old games would no longer work, so I took it back to W7. She kept getting asked to change to W10, but she said she just ticked the 'No' button & after a few tries I think it gave up, it certainly has not forcibly installed it yet!
My W8.1 laptop converted easily, only had to delete fsx.cfg & let it reconfigure another. My tower which is my main device though is staying 8.1, just in case!!! Auto updates is switched Off & I've reconfigured the registry according to the M$ website for that DRM update that seems to affect a lot of other people. My CD player still works as does disc 4 on my tower, my laptop though has the unmentionable & had it before upgrade.
