WIP - Charity Farm/Baxterley

ok... some of you may recall a while back i started work on my local Farm strip; Charity Farm/Baxterley.... a major step came last night as i got the ground poly in... here's the first image (Have yet to move it a few hundred metres so it's out the way of the darned power lines, nearly found them things myself real world in the past), it's not a large field, in fact for scale by the hangar is a Luscombe or similar.... also of note is the dogleg runway, real world procedure dictates you run your engine up, release the brakes (if available) get to the bend and almost quite literally boot the rudder.... another hazard is EGBB around 5-8nm away, you're only 500m outside it's control zone, so best bet to avoid having to contact them... take off, turn downwind (while staying under EGBBs control zone) exit control zone then pick up height... on a windy day.... best bet on arrival to Baxterley.... crab it as much as possible.... there be a tree within 30ft of your wingtip on arrival.... all in all a favourite place of mine real world, being done for FS :jump: and yes, in top down view that is a Cessna 182 oriented North on the Runway, allows you to spot the hazards....

Nice going.

Are you Gmaxing custom ground textures into the scenery?

You do know you can also build up multie layers of ground texes too Matt.

thats more or less what i've done with this, another trick i learnt was to hit the base image/layer with a sharpen... add in a noise layer and it blends things in nicely....

gotta figure out the seasonal switches now..... Joy! been working on it flat out since.... about Midnight.... no sleep, just nose to the grindstone....

Adding the noise level certainly gives everything more vibrancy and depth.

For those interested in dabbling, Gmax is an excellent way of introducing really high quality, sharp textures to local scenery, particularly at airports.

I've read a fair amount on 'flickering' textures, but by placing them just a little above ground level (10cms in my case), seem to avoid this issue altogether.

There is an excellent tutorial by Bill Womack; 'Creating High-Detail FS Ground Polygons' for anyone wishing to have a try.

The results are well worth the effort.

yeah, remind me later Nigel and i'll whizz you over the base .MDL for Baxterley so you can take a sneaky peek :kilroy:

just debating best method of tacking these hedges, might just make them a 2D polygon.... save some resources for the bloomin' trees there are.... then sort this seasonal stuff out.....

"Shh... he'll never know i'm here" WIP Hedges, they've been placed, just gotta work the texture a bit more......

just made a quick video to show a circuit (you'll never be able to tell i've done this a fair few times real-world, but in a Tiggie, or Europa)... you'll see how hemmed in it is.... trees are MTrees9 in their entirety no other library used if i recall so should be pretty simple to get looking right... i have to keep flying it is my problem to make sure it even feels like the place.... so far so good! will post video link shortly.... :salute:

Neat looking little farm strip there. Any clues on best grass textures? Definitely liking the hedges.

I've been working on my local(ish) strip too, EGHO, Thruxton. I've been trying out the Bill Womack method and I think I might have hit a problem with how many layers you can add in total, I'm up to about 18 I think. I'm also being stymied a bit in places by them having added extra bits of asphalt since the last aerial photo I can find. Perhaps I should be less ambitious and do EGLS, Old Sarum, instead.

Thruxton? now you're talking my language! i sometimes go up in the original Thruxton Jackaroo, a modified tiger moth, not much longer and you'll be seeing the video of the WIP strip.... the Jackaroo G-AOIR now lives at Baxterley along with a Vans, Europa XS, Tiger Moth and something else thats name evades me.....

EDIT: here we go WIP Video of it, despite all the tree objects she's pretty smooth on the frame rates, only another 3 hedgelines and the foliage is in.....

Wasn't the Jackaroo in the month before lasts LAA magazine?

Good little video. That strip with the hightree and the cockeyed runway is a bit reminiscent of Popham.

The ones I know at Thruxton are no Jackaroo but are pretty interesting.

cool! an Edgely Optica! you'd never guess it from the scenery but in the end i only needed 1 layer total, it's a well maintained private airstrip, visitors have to call in first and if we don't have any fuel (quite often) then we redirect them unless they still want to stop....

well first Hangar is Built (Minus the Door at this stage) but here's how she sits... all mapped to 4 maps for detail (it's my local farm strip, i'm allowed to be picky right? :icon_lol: ) onto the textures! :jump:

Oooooh!!!

That's a beauty Matt!
Although still a noody, that's one very fine hangar.

And if anyone can get a decent set o'texes on that building, it's you.

Got them in the oven yet?

I'm a lousy baker myself, so when my hangars are done, can I shove them in yours mate?

Was gonna say looks a tight squeeze between the hanger taxiway and runway with those hedges till I saw the "Flanker"

Then thought to myself well....a Flanker! there? He must be used to tight squeezes :icon_lol:

I envy the speed you fire scenery up!

Matt :salute:

yeah strips not really designed for anything much bigger than the AN-2... but i discovered i can get a flanker in, just not hangar it.... bloomin big, but oh so beautiful these Flankers :jump:

still.... hangar 2 should be up tomorrow, then it's onto house, barns, rest of foliage and a few other bits before my test team get their mitts on it before i dish it out to the masses :salute:

Great stuff!

I am envious... I have had nose to the glass for a loong time, itching to get into scenery design.
Just a quick one, local strip maybe.
But I know I do not have the time, because it will suck you in!

SO I'm happy to watch you do this, what a treat.
