Some of you may have seen this, but if you haven't done it, stop the film and go frame by frame when it passes him. It's closer than it looks.

it's not real. If it was, the guy would have been killed (squashed flat) by the pressure wave as well as blown away by the exhaust...

Looks like the plane is about the man's height again above him to me.

Also, there was a mythbusters episode where they had a hard time breaking glass with a supersonic shock wave at very low altitude. As for the exhaust, I'm sure it could knock him over if the plane was on the ground not moving. But that's a static situation.

Still, I'm nervous standing in the breakdown lane with 18 wheelers going by me at 60mph. :icon_lol:

There are higher resolution versions of this photo that also feature higher FPS counts. The tank is within a couple inches of his head.
 
Seen this video lots of times before......

The guy's French Foreign Legion, a/c is a French AF Mirage F1 and it was carried out in North Africa..Chad iirc. Probably looks a lot closer than it actually was due to the camera perspective

When I first saw the video some time ago that's exactly my first thought -- it cannot be as shown. No way can a jet a full military power pass over someone that low without causing him some serious injury. If nothing else, a blown set of ear drums, but at least knocked him on his can.

I think it's real but it's essentially an optical illusion. It's not a couple of inches off his head at all, it just appears that way because of the perspective.

I imagine the actual distance was 5 metres or so.

If it had been within inches, I don't think it would have injured him or blown his eardrums (especially since he's wearing ear defenders) but it certainly would have made him stumble a little.

Edit: In fact I've had a look through the video and the jet is at least 5-6 feet above his head. If you look at the shadow of the man it is directly to his right (sun directly to his left). If you manage to pause the film when the jet's shadow is incidental then it's not even in frame;

Note that the bit of the aircraft you can see in the frame is ghosting (a residual image). This is obviously the case if you watch the video and stop it intermittently. The ghosting is obvious. If you don't believe me/can't see it on the video, then think about the size of that man and the size of the wing in comparison lol. It is not the plane, it is where the plane was some distance away.

The shadows are perfectly aligned, and because they lie at a cardinal angle you do not have to account for perspective. As you can see the jet is not in frame.
 
I remember watching a show years ago which was filmed at Edwards AFB. The camera crew and a Test Pilot went out onto the dry lake bed to film low passes of a T-38. The T-38 Pilot made numerous passes over the folks on the dry lake bed and two of the passes were right at .99 Mach only 10 feet over their heads. They did not get blown down by jetwash/turbulence or even have much dust stirred up around them. The Test Pilot on the ground with the film crew pointed out that as the T-38 passed them, they would feel the air pressure change(spike) and then the intense sudden noise blast. After that the wake from the jet already spread outwards away from them.

Here is a frame-by-frame, and you can really see that it is the perspective. The aircraft is flying slightly to the left of the man on the ground, and the camera is slightly to his right and below.

it aint real, the video looks like it's been edited. Look closely at the overhead pics, 2 frames are identical.
 
I believe it's real, and not very smart either. As far as shock waves and their ability to stir things up, I remember seeing footage of an F-111 that was TFR-ing at about 100ft through the desert. You could see the V-wedge shock wave on the ground in front of the plane. It was blowing up alot of sand and crap at a prodigious rate...but then the F-111 was doing about mach 1.2. The Mirage was most likely doing about 200-250 knots, judging from the type of smoke trail it was leaving.

That may actually be an issue with the video type. I said frame-by-frame, but frames in a traditional sense are lost in compression.Each frame relies on the data in the frames before and after to render a whole scene. That's why when you slow down flash videos, you get that ghosting.
 
its real, quite a lot of people have done it. Seems to be some sort of game, if you flinch, you loose :engel016:
