Worked on model planes this evening

A couple years ago or so ago, I picked up 4 or 5 airplane model kits at the local Salvation Army for a buck or two each. No instructions in any of the kits, one had no decals. No biggie as they are just going to be ceiling hangers...just a bit of aerial decor to add to my office/sim room. Well, this evening, I worked on 4 of them. The Texan I am taking my time with and doing it up as nicely as I can...which really aint all that since I haven't built a model in 20 some years. The Mig 21 and Brewster Buffalo....they both had missing cockpit parts and the 21 had no decals and the Buffalo's decal were all dried up and crackled. They got a rather hasty glue together and rudimentary paint jobs. The BAE Hawk....it ain't looking too shabby....not sure how the decals on it will fair though...they look a bit overly dry.

It was nice sitting in the living room, a couple old TV trays covered with model parts, glue and paint, a WW I air warfare movie playing on Net Flix...can't remember what it was...it was just on for back ground noise.

Obio, you have found Shangri-La AND the Fountain of Youth. I can't imagine a better way to spend an evening.

Your post brings back fond memories and I sincerely thank you.

it may be too late....but the better hobby shops have a spray paint for "smoking" window glass..its for custom cars or limos ect..but works great for thos airplanes that have messed up cockpits ( sigh) or are cieling fliers,,

you paint the inside of the canopy not the outside with the smoke..can be done very lightly...then you just hand paint or if yer good at masking..paint the canopy frame

Models

I really enjoyed building models when I was growing up. I even did well at a couple of hobby shows that showcased them.

I got to enjoy the hobby again while my son was growing up and we had great fun building armored fighting vehicles and aeroplanes.

Now that I'm near the manditory retirement age, I may just take up the hobby again. They have a great model shop at the base PX.

Witt Pilot asked for pics...and pics he will get. Like I said, my modeling skills are WAY BAD since I have not done any building in 20 plus years. And the Mig-21 and Buffalo are just getting some slop treatment since they have parts missing and no decals...the Buffalo had decals, but they were so old and crackled that they fell apart when I put them in the water to ready them for applying to the plane. Not sure what I am going to do with the paint scheme on the Buffalo. May go camo with it and throw on some Finish insignia (white circle with the blue swastika...should be fairly easy to hand paint.).

The Texan is the Monogram 1/48 scale. The Mig-21 bis is the 1/72 scale Fujimi kit. And the Buffalo is the 1/48th scale Tamiya kit from 1992....19 year old decal sheets do not work so well.

Also in the wings is the 1/48 scale Monogram P-51D that can be done up as the Big Beautiful Doll or as Miss Marilyn II...I think I will go with the Big Beautiful Doll as it will require a lot less painting...and my brush techniques are way rusty and I'm not about to invest a chunk of change into an airbrush and compressor to paint a handful of thrift store purchased model kits. Also have a couple 1/72 kits way back in the back of the closet....Fiat Cr.42 Falcon and some other biplane...that thing will only be about 3 inches long fully put together.

Tim,
If you have a local hobby shop they might stock one of the good quality clear top coats, you'd need to ask but I've rescued some very very old decals with one of the Testors semi gloss versions.
Worth a try, shame about the Buffalo, one of the first really good 1:48 models by Tamiya and a couple of interesting decal sets.

Careful Tim, that can become a full-time costly addiction!

From one who has been addicted since 1958. :>)

No fears of modeling becoming an expensive hobby for me. I don't buy them....and I don't build them. Heck, I have 2 unopened 66 Chevy Nova kits in my closet that I bought 3 years ago at a local discount store for $4.99 each. I passed up a very nice 1/24th scale B-24D (my favorite heavy bomber of all time) model at another discount store and it was only $9.99...but now I wish I had bought it...how often do you find 1/24th scale models of the heavies....and how often do you find 1/24th scale B-24D model kits for a 10 spot.

Deb, my loving wife, has told me time and time again that I should buy and build a model or two a year...but I don't. The cost of glue and paints is way higher than I am comfortable paying, I don't have the space to display them, I don't want to spend the time dusting them. And let's face it, once you paint a model plane, it's done. With my sim planes, I can paint the same plane time and time again, they take up NO space, never need dusted, and I can fly/crash them without harming them. And all it costs is time...the paint is free, the wax is free.

Therein you probably see why former modelers like Piglet and I are now deeply in love with simming. Buy a program and the rest is up to you.

I still think plastic models have a place...Staring at the computer screen all day gets a little exhausting.
