Can anybody tell me what this would be if it were what it's trying to be? French-based members and Viso, please give the others a chance first! :wavey:

Hi Nigel, is it one of the Bostons the French had on order from the Yanks before the Fall of France? I know the Brits took over the order after the Fall. Is this one that got through?

Yes, but you're not allowed to call it a Boston, because as it stands, it isn't one yet! The French received 116 of them before the Armistice, and some did serve in the Battle of France. Most went to French North Africa, where they basically just rotted - other than a strike on Gibraltar! Many were destroyed on the ground during Op. Torch.

So what did the French call it, then?

I think they became Boston bombers and Havoc night fighters when
those ordered by France were diverted to Britian after France fell.

Didn't the French just call them the DB-7?
:ernae:

That's right - DB-7 A-3 in fact. "A" for "Assault", and "3" for the number of crew members. In British service, they became the Boston MkI. The Havoc MkI night-fighter was in fact NOT the initial French version, but was the Boston MkII bomber which the RAF refused to use as a bomber... All originally intended for France.
