be fair, but honest, this first set of specs is the one im planning on getting, the second set ( or more) will be alterants,
this one has things "I" think are pretty good..but its a quad core, which raises questios for me because i read somewhere that FSX only reads,or "see's" one core at a time, which in my little mind says it will only use 1Ghz at a time?..and just how the heck does a 2 video card set up even work?..its only 600 watts of power too...but my currant PC is 250..so its better than i have now..BTW its a 2.4GHz,4GB ram/Rom?.512mbs of ram on the video card.

so here are the new specs.

this would actually be my second choice ,due to the fact it has a 500 watt power supply, and win 7.and almost $450.00 cheaper!

If there were one thing I would change, it would be to go with an Intel processor.
When I was asking questions about the computer I built about 1 1/2 years ago, it seemed to be the majority opinion that Intel processors handled FSX better than AMD.
Maybe things have changed in the last year?

Anything with an i5/i7 Intel CPU and Nvidia GTX670 or above seems to be the flavor for FSX atm

Not sure of your price range but these for example are what I would be getting - all under $1000:

If you're going higher it just gets better :)

I'm still using my i7-920 (3 year old original D0 stepping version) with a GTX670 to run FSX and P3DV2 with no troubles

I would up the power of the PSU. You can never have enough power and graphics cards will eat a lot of that 350 Watts.

Graphics cards in crossfire or SLI will have absolutely no effect for FSX. Then better spend the money on one good gpu.

For the pru I would not go below 750W. here is a good psu calculator: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
It's result is the minimum. I strongly suggest some buffer, and remember that your usb devices also use power.

As mentioned above, graphics cards are the big power eaters, and If you are looking at running FSX, an Intel processor is the way to go. An Intel i5 has plenty of overclocking room. Remember that for FSX the cpu (processor) is more important than the gpu (graphics card).

In the end it is your budget what determins the components.

For running FSX, I would prioritize my components as follows:
1) CPU (recommend Intel i5/i7)
2) PSU (recommend min 750W)
3) RAM (8GB DDR3)
4) GPU (Nvidia GTX 670)

I know how difficult it can be to make choices for the best configuration within the budget available. I built my latest FSX pc about 2 years ago, but upgraded my psu and gpu last Christmas (money only stretches so far, lol). I spent a lot of time reading reviews and benchmarks before picking each component.

I hope this will get you some ideas.

Good luck with making your choices.

Btw: here is a link to some very good hardware suggestions. http://kostasfsworld.wordpress.com/fsx-software-and-hardware-guide/
Scroll to about half way down the page.

In order of importance:

1) CPU as fast Intel i5/i7 as one can afford and clockable (clocking is needed before or later - nothing is enough for FSX)

2a) Operating system either Windows 7 or 8.1, but absolutely 64bit. That gives most of the RAM for FSX which cannot (as a 32bit software) use more than 4GB anyway (OS can then use out of 4GB boundary memory too)

2b) RAM 8GB minimum but there is no need for more unless one uses 64bit programs

3) GPU NVidia because then there is more ability for setting it up (any GTX 6xx should be enough). I have had both NVidia and AMD GPUs and haven't noticed any remarkable difference in performance (with the same level GPUs).

4) PSU must be powerfull enough (power depends of the system). I'd invest on the quality of the power supply. Once I had strange CTDs or system boot ups (not only with FSX) and the guilty was a cheap PSU.

In spite of those sometimes FSX runs out of RAM (if settings are as full). Then there is no other solution as reduce FSX settings or addons like for example amount of photo sceneries and other things that consume memory.

Pekka

Edit: ...and FSX really needs for example Kosta's or Bojote's tweaks (linked above).

Hi - I noticed that there is only 1 hard drive - I have not had a single hard drive in any of my computers since 1998, usually one for programs and the other for storage, it should not be that expensive to add another, as I'm sure whatever system you buy will easily take another.
(I have a bit of overkill - currently running 3 x 1 terabyte and 1 x 500 Gb drives. Also agree about having a bigger power supply => 750 watt.

I have Operation System on SSD drive and that really improves system loading times dramatically. It takes only seconds to boot up OS. My FSX is still on traditional HDD because it (nearly 200GB) doesn't even fit on my SSD and takes several minutes to load for running.

Is anyone out there running FSX on SSD? Does it improve remarkably FSX's functionality and how?

Pekka

Hi Pekka,

I do, and it improves FSX performance dramatically!! And interestingly SSD prices are going down. If I would buy the same SSD that I bought a year ago, I would pay only half the price I originally paid for it. I have a 1TB classic HDD in my rig, but that is for data and the hangar.

IMHO SSD's and oveclocking are the things that FSX needed the most.
