Would you keep the money?

She knew she did not earn the money...she had a responsibility to return it. She should be made to pay it back in full.
Ted

If she entered a contract with the City for employment, then she has a duty to perform for that compensation. The city has a right to either get her to show up for work and work the next 12 years without pay, or to pay the money back in full. (I'm sure there are some other legal suites they can bring against her too ...)

Chances are she hasn't got it all squirreled away somewhere so she's gonna have a hard time repaying.

If it were me, as Mikey asks, I would have been working from day one and this wouldn't be an issue.

Definitely say something and sort it out. Many years ago when I worked in Public Service - Local Government there was a major reorganisation and I was automatically given a job with a future (yet to be formed) new LA. In the lead up before the new authorities were set up I applied for and got another job as a design engineer with a different authority which I accepted. I then immediately wrote to the original LA and declined their offer and told them that it was because I was taking a job with another employer/authority. After a month in my new job I was suddenly surprised to find that my bank balance was much higher than anticipated. Yes lol!, despite my having informed the original LA in writing that I was moving elsewhere they had still paid me for the month. I contacted them straight away and made arrangements to return the payment.

At the end of the day receiving money that you haven't earned or are not entitled and then not declaring it, whether it is by default or deliberate action, is still theft whichever way you look at it. Even worse in my view is if it is stolen from a public body which we all pay our taxes to finance.

It is inevitable that these things are discovered at some point so no, I wouldn't keep it and I would say something. If I knew with 100% certainty that it would never ever be discovered however then I would keep every penny with no problems of conscience whatsoever.

Most Definitely a theft....

I would have returned the money the first check or either work for them...

Seems the plan all along was to steal the money, giving it back was never the intent. They were just stupid, they shoulda done what those folks in California did and just give themselves raises in the 800k-to 1 million range with all those nice retirement benefits..............

I don't think its a matter of "Would you keep it" its more a matter of "Could you keep it" ... LOL! :icon_lol: I sense a very large hammer looming.

http://hamptonroads.com/2010/08/norfolk-identifies-noshow-employee-mum-salary This has been on our local News and in the local paper. She received a pay check every two weeks for twelve years with full benfits. and never worked...lol. Five managers have been fired over this because it was brought to their attention repeatedly. My question to you guys is would ya keep receiving the money or say something.

Nope.....I like to sleep at night almost worry-free. Something for nothing rarely ends up being that.

Well to top all of this off she also received free full coverage medical. Our taxpayers have footed the whole bill on all of her medical problems including all drugs...ect..ect. Even though someone else made this hugh mistake, to me she was wrong to let it keep going on this long. She knew what she was doing was 100% wrong....she just got caught.

TB what bothers me here is that it was brought up repeatedly and questioned about the payment to her. All of this over a complaint about another employee...something don't sound right here...Mike

Yeah Mike, I smell a mackerel too. You don't just go home on paid leave and stay there for the next 12 years. This lady lives in my neighborhood, I don't know her but she's got a nice two-story house. The Norfolk Community Services Board must pay pretty well, maybe I can get a job there and stay home. :d
