WWI missions

no missions, but.....

Sorry to say Stoney I have no missions, but after some RL interuptions I am continuing with my Flanders roads project.
Attached are some shots of current work (Roucourt, Denain, Cambrai, Famars). By January I hope to have an upload ready which comprise historically correct airfields, roads, railways, rivers, canals, forests etc taken from British ordnance maps compiled during the war, and include the cities of Doullens, Arras, Douai, Cambrai, Le Cateau and Valenciennes. It's taking some time but its all pretty detailed info. An airfields info folder will be included for the 50-60 airfields I have researched. Basically I am transferring details from British ordnance maps from the war to the game.
Hopefully there will be mission makers willing then to create missions for this new terrain.

PS all the work is done with Ground2K. Its all VTP1 lines and polys and barely makes a dent in fps. My poor old steam powered celeron chugs along quite happily without much frame loss.
And hats off to Simonu for your Easylandclass cities which have been very accurately placed, providing appropriate urban tiles where required (btw I have employed your 'dark cobblestone' road graphic for railways instead)

Its alot better than I ever expected. Just make sure your missions are of short distance of duration!

Man! Those are great aerodromes Jagd. Much better than my poor efforts,(much better). Could you be persuaded to U/L the GSL.

Thanks Miami, in fact I used that very good Spad site to scratch build an accurate cockpit interior for a 1/28th Spad I built. You can see my 1/28th efforts here:http://s252.photobucket.com/albums/hh37/stoney61/

In 2001 Alpha Simulations released a patch for their Campaign Set of WWI planes and missions called Combat Aces.

box.jpg

It features many of the aircraft of the era including Zepplins with AI and scenery. I bought a boxed set of the expansion from Amazon UK and Alpha Sim kindly donnated to me the patch which included a number of add on planes and missions. They appear to be sharing many of their older planes and resources with the community and I can ask if it is possible to share the missions of the pack. the planes, they warned me, are quite a bit outdated graphically. I have not yet run the add on. But i can ask about sharing some of the resources if they are willing.

The planes in the expansion are:

Airco DH2
Albatros DVa
Avro 504C
Briston F.2B
Eindecker
Fokker D VII
Fokker D VIII
Fokker Dr.1
Fokker Dr.1 Red Baron
Halberstadt CL II
H-P O_400 AI
Nieuport 17
SE5a
Sophwith Camel
Sopwith Triplane
Spad VII
S0S DIII
Zepplin Airship
Zepplin Airship AI
Zeppelin Staaken R6
Zepplin Staaken R6 AI

The Expansion that they were very kind to give to me included some more planes:

"DH.4, Be2c, Junkers D1, Pfalz III and an RE.8, as well as 10 new missions"

i dont know what the scenery is but evidently it is pretty detailed and the overall area includes the front lines.

I would not share any of this without their permission but perhaps Alpha Sim might release things because of age. And may be some of the plane wizards could update some of the planes with new textures, and other things. I will wait to see if there is interest and then ask Alpha S about permissions.

PS Reading the Read me with the Expansion i see they may have had frame rate problems with the original expansion becuase the read me describes changes that were made that I might want to change back again....it says:

Additionally the drawing distances have been reduced from 20 Km to 8 Km, in certain locations front line dog fights would be close enough to the airfield scenery bubble for the static scenery to be drawn with the result in loss of frame rates, moving the drawing commands closer helps this situation but does make it a little harder to find the airfield when returning from missions. The use of the map mission way points and ADF gauges will negate this minor problem.

I would hope to have the best and largest draw distance for the scenery, i guess i can explore the bgl's to see if that setting is clear somewhere... but just saw that now.

it is an old old one Miami, sorry i did not put that in my message, i am sure it is not in print anymore ...i got mine thru Amazon. I will ask them if people are interested if we can share the assets and missions. They may allow sharing the planes but maybe not the missions as it is still for sale used.

With Grinseed's wonderful and complete add on and maybe some other things made by members here, we should be able to get quite a decent WWI variant for CFS2 going. I certainly am interested in the possiblity. Aerocrate's 1916 campaign and scenery is a help too. I chatted with the team from Aerocrate a year ago or so and they dont plan to do any more work as far as they said then..so we are on our own for continuing developments. That was why i wanted to share about Combat Aces as i did not know about it myself until i stumbled upon it when doing searches for CFS2 add ons and expansions. And I did not know about the add on for it until i contacted Alpha Simulations to find out about it and they very kindly gave me that expansion to it as a gift. I still dont know exactly what scenery is included as i have not loaded it up yet, been too busy with many other projects and research.

It would be particularly fun to have the Zepplins that are included in the Combat Aces expansion and the Zeppelin Staaken R6 both of which have AI versions.

Here is the Amazon entry for Combat Aces for UK, looks like i may have gotten the last one :)

It does have a lovely illustrated large paperback book format manual and details...

I just wrote to Alpha Sim to see if it is possible for them to release any of the planes or campaigns for us to share or maybe host here on SOH.

Phil at Alpha Sim has given us five planes with panels and some new missions that will install into either CFS2 or FS2000. I am going to upload them here to the library as soon as i get his complete info so we can give proper attribution. He has the copyright and has given us full permission to share. It comes with an installer. Will get more info soon, am waiting to see about some of the missions and planes from the original Combat Ace Expansion.

The planes are:

DH4, Junkers D1, Be2C, Pfalz III and the RE.8 and the panels for them and 10 new misisons including a aerial display for the King with a three plane formation :)

Here is the expansion the files will work in either CFS2 or FS2000 courtesy of our friend at Alpha Sim, this was very kind of him:

http://www.filefront.com/14741367/Combat_Aces_Patch_No.1.zip/

his note to me today reads:

OK, here's 'CAX1' ! It comes with an installer, although it does not seem to work with Vista. So just double-click the file InstallCAX and you can install into CFS2 or FS2000. There are 5 new aircraft with panels - DH4, Junkers D1, Be2C, Pfalz III and the RE.8. There are also 10 new missions, featuring the new and the original models, one is an air display for the King with a 3-ship Be2C !

Please feel free to share this with others in the CFS2 community. Aircraft can be modded in any way without asking for permission.

Regards,
Phil,
AlphaSim

I am guessing to run the missions we can substitute other planes for the ones from the original Combat Aces unless we get permission to share them, Phil is asking the owner of the rights and will let us know.

Another wonderful example of the generosity and kindess of the Flight Sim Community in action.

Salute to Phil! :)

I checked out the aircraft that had .mdl files & they show some promise. They are generally better on FRs than Aerocrate birds but obviously not as detailed or up to date. Hopefully we will be able to get the complete aircraft soon. Especially tempting are the F2b, Fokker D-7 ( especially if it has non-mirrored textures) & the zeppelin. I assume that you intend to upload the base CAX1 package here. As Phil has said 'tweak away' (usual AlphaSim freeware policy) it would most likely be kosher to change the airfields to Aerocrate versions although I don't know what the Alpha fields look like yet.

I will for sure beg for the Zepplin and the sceneries. There are over 80 missions and 6 full campaigns in the original package and if we can get permission to run some of that we can i am sure change fields and switch out planes..i was looking in the files today for what is more modern ie more detailed and there are some fine planes others have made since this older package. I myself really would love to tangle with the zepplins, i have fond memories of the very first computer game i ever played, the old Dynamix Red Baron which has some fun missoins including Zepplin night raids over London and chase the trains....come to think of it, we could make train missions for CFS2 using the trains we have as trains did not change that much between WWI and II. So yes, if we get permission i will upload the base package.....just waiting to hear from Phil. He has the copyright on the planes and missions he sent us but not the original package.

oh, and Phil mentioned what was used to make these older planes:

Please bear in mind that the models were made using archaic software (AF99),

Yes, it's obvious that they are AF99 planes which mans that the textures will have to be converted to .bmps which isn't a big deal.
