Yay, new video card...

wow, a complete reinstall sucks. Next time try doing a full driver clean through safe mode and such... you can save yourself from a complete OS reinstall that way. Glad it's working again though.

That's very likely if your card has 1024MB. Try USERVA=2304.
 
When I install a new vid driver I swap over to the default MS drivers. Then reboot.Then I uninstall the old drivers........... reboot again.
Then I install the new drivers. This hasn't had a bad install since I started doing it.
 
The problem persists, but appears much later now, after about five minutes of flying.

*Sigh*

If I could just RMA that effin' thing...
 
It may not be related to drivers or your card at all...


Might want to run mem test and check things on that end too....
 
I've got the problems ever since I've installed that card.

So how would Memtest play into this?
 
I thought you had this problem before and got this card as a fix.....

Nope, my problem before was a (suspected) video memory overflow (autogen spikes and CTD) on my 8800 and yeah, I got the 4850 as a replacement.

Now I'm getting graphics errors all around.

I would say the card has a real hardware problem.
It happened to me with a NVidia 6800GT, back when I was flying FS9. The card would perform OK on other games, but I kept getting artifacts and flashes in FS9. The card had a problem, I brought it back to the shop and they gave another one to me, and that new one was working correctly.

Did you buy this card new or second hand ? If it's new, just bring your computer back to the shop (if possible) and try to get that card replaced.
 
Are you manually running the fan for that card? I know my 4870X2 runs real hot.....


But again its OK for everything but FSX ?

Have you done this.......

Go to start....Run...Type in dxdiag...Then run tests on your DX and see if that might be the actual problem? May offer no help but at least than DX is ruled out as the culprit...

The fan is custom and doesn't have a speed control, neither software nor hardware.

But again its OK for everything but FSX ?

Ruled out. All tests were passed.
 
Just for general entertainment...some FSX SP2 shots live from the frontlines (lie!):












SP1 runs fine though - at least from what I've tried so far.
 
*Bump for Update*

Even though the problem occurred after quite some flying time in the last few test flights instead of after 10-15 minutes like in the beginning (fiddled around on a few settings in between that), I got rid of the 4850 (found someone who traded it for his 9800GTX+ 512).

FSX performance generally was just terrible. Especially in heavy overcast situations. My 8800, despite its age, performs way better than the new 4850!

The only letdown is the VRam of the 9800, but I guess I won't need that much playing in 1280*1024.

I'm just glad to be finally rid of that 4850. ATI cards, unless in warhammer format (4870X2) simply don't seem to be made for FSX.
 
Gee I guess all the pics showing my Hd4850 showing high fps must just be a lie Bjoern...check the fps over Olympia. No blurries, no issues. You're an engineering student...did you check to see if it could be a bad card?

No clouds, no overcast...

No offense, Ted but your shots of a (preset?) hazy, cloudless (or am I blind?) dawn flight aren't what I would consider a proof of the performance capabilities of the 4850.

Hit me with some screens displaying average FPS in a cloudfest, meaning multiple layers (3 to 5). Or just try the attached flight. My 4850 went crazy in there, FPS ranged from 1.1 to 20 (locked) and the average FPS were around 13.5 all combined with random stuttering. My 8800GTS isn't foolproof either, but delivers a visibly more fluid flight with averages at 17.5 FPS.

If your mileage is better, that 4850 really didn't like my system and I shall say no more. :d

The most important thing for me is that my hardware and FSX configuration handles every situation the virtual world can come up with (weather, busy airports) at least acceptably well. And the 4850, while delivering a remarkably smooth experience in little-to-none cloud situations, just failed at that, even overclocked.
So I'm really glad I got rid of it without much of a hassle.

Yep, multiple times. And not with FSX. No visible evidences of a bad card in every game or test. Maybe just plain bad luck with my combination of components and software.
 
Bjorne I'm not 100% sure what you want as I fly in real weather and not sure how to prove it. I flew in F/L for over 12 years and there were very few mornings when I took off from Livermore that I could not see more than 30-40 miles. As a matter of fact I would guess that most of the time in the mornings or evenings when I flew that the visibility was less than 30 in the bay area. However, I have done a preset for you with clouds and the P-47 and another set with the WOP Spitfire over Olympia WA in a building storm which mainly is where I fly on the computer. My interest in this is not to prove you wrong so much as wondering why you had the problem. I have found the HIS ICE Q-4 Turbo HD4850 very effective in all my builds that I have sold, even with Phenom II builds.

OK, let's see if these pics offer any proof. These are in sequential order as they were taken by snapshot-cont'd on next two posts
