Your favorite port-overs...

More portovers from NZ, US and CCCP

The freeware Tin Mouse 737 hasn't been converted to native FSX yet (Captain Sim is doing one...). Too bad the Tin Mouse has no VC. Here it is with my own rendition of the 2D panel, made with elements from the payware Captain Sim 727...

Pacific Aerospace FU-24 Fletcher by Deane Baunton from New Zealand is weird looking but is very convenient for VFR flying in the new FTX NZ scenery... No portover issues, excellent FPS, nice VC...

Kirill Konovalov Ilyushin Il-86 is now FSX native, but not yet his Il-96... A russian airliner with glass cockpit... quite exotic...

View attachment 55953 View attachment 55954

The Ilyushin Il-18 family is wonderful (http://il18.fluo.net/)... Most gauges are FS98 style and don't work in FSX. But the VC is too nice to pass... fly it without gauges! Looking at static photoreal panel textures does the trick !

Port-overs, port-overs and more port-overs..............

Michel Migaud's Fokke G-1a work perfect in FSX as well

port-overs_a7.jpg

I failed to read further down the thread. :kilroy: Not fair pointing out an aircraft that (to my knowledge) no one can download!! :icon_lol:

I would agree - I just picked up the power pack on e-bay for under $10 on ebay. Other then needing to replace the window textures with more transparent ones, the planes all installed and seem to be fine.

Here is a link for those interested:

:ernae:

HOLY COW!!!! THAT'S CHEAP!!!!! I just picked one up. THANKS!!!!

I bought them all (used, some scratches, and then some) Alphasim mainly, at a bargain last year, from a computer/gaming second hand shop. I was in heaven when I found them. They're great models even as port-overs.

Don't know Stiz, I'm currently re-doing the textures. When they are finished I'm planning make the beta available as it is. Michel Migaud, the man who made the model seems to have vaporised. Even the guys from Restauravia have been able to reach him.

Cheers,
Huub

great news :) (shame the guys just vanished though) you gonna do same for that fokker DXXI as well? (think its the DXXI)

Stiz, The original designer gave the source files of the Fokker D.XXI to somebody who might be able to finish it. And I haven't been involved in the development of the D.XXI in the same way I was with the G-1a, therefore I won't do the same with the D.XXI, however I have quite some textures finished already for that one in case it gets released. (The D.XXI is very old and I don't think it will port over).

Oleboy, the question was "what are your favourite port overs"..... ;) So it is a fair answer :icon_lol:

Cheers,
Huub

Getting to be fewer and fewer port overs for me as many of my favorites have now been done in native FSX, but still have a few like the MAAM Avenger and a few of Jen's like the DC-4.

I run DX10 all the time as my computer just runs FSX so much smoother that way and nearly all the ports continue to work well using Addon Converter X, http://www.flightsimtools.com/adconvx/. Nearly always works, converts on the fly.

cheers,
steve :wavey:

Hi Steve
thanks to your post I have purchased Addon Converter and now I fly enthusiastically all MAAM planes (and several others FS9 I have saved in a corner of my HD); BTW I am like you running DX10 on a Windows7 64K
Just a question, if I may:
I've run Addon Converter on CaptSim FS9 Legendary F 104 and it worked perfectly on external and internal textures, 2D cockpit etc but in VC the windows are black and I dont see any so-colled "glass" texture which I could "Alpha adjusting" like in other models.

Do you, or someone else on SOH, have any suggestion on this ???
Thanks in advance
Italo

italoc look in your global textures for an F104 glass texture.....it probably just needs a new alpha put with it to make it clear. I'm tempted to rebuy the F-4 to get her flying in FSX...but I'm not aware of a fix for here either.

More favourite portovers: Posky 777 FS9 w/ Greg Wilson FSX panel

The FS9 Project Open Sky Boeing 777 is definitly nothing new, especially since a native FSX version is available (without VC). But I still like the FS9 version with VC, one of the best freeware airliner VC I've seen so far. I'm using it with the FSX widescreen panel and gauges package by Greg Wilson JB Panels (jb777panel_r09.zip @ avsim). It turns this freeware 777 into a payware quality addon. FPS are quite decent. Installation is a bit tricky, but complete FS9 package are available everywhere, like this PIA 777-200 at Simviation. Just add Greg's FSX panel. Give it a try!

Have to agree. Great exterior model. Great VC (even though a port it does look and work like payware) and it flies nicely. Getting her in and out of bush and small island runway is a job, not to mention the fuel bill from those two big kerosene burners. Have flown on the 777 a lot IRL and it is the finest airliner in the sky IMHO.

Hi Roger

Beautiful pictures of these old wonderfull planes

You talk about changing the "alpha" in the props and the glass to avoid the "behind the clouds" look, and they sure look good on your pics.

Are there any tutorials around on how to do that?

Does it require special program`s ?

And last. Is it difficult to do :icon_lol: ?

Soeren

Hi Soeren,
Thanks for the compliment on the screen shots!
First I have no ability as a painter and PSP, Gimp etc elude me, but to enable the use of port-overs I have been able to master the use of two freeware programs to enable me to make changes to alphas in textures so that port-overs are more acceptable in FsX.
DXTBMP enables changes to be made to both image and alpha channel and then saved. This program by Martin Wright can be downloaded here http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/ you will need some .dlls for the program to work, also downloadable from Martin's website.

In DXTBMP I then asign the editor as Irfanview another freeware program that I use mainly to alter the alpha channel. For prop blurs I darken the alpha considerably (typically by 180% in Irfanview) and then save (as a .bmp) and then apply it to the prop texture and save.
Always save your original textures so if it all goes wrong you can statrt again, lol!

Thanks for the informations Roger. Very helpful.

Pouring coffee, and having a go at it :running: :icon_lol:

Heavy bombers and jets was my favorite. I was at a store seen the box and bought it. Installed it and had to fix some minor issues but it worked in FSX and still have them flying today.

Jordan Moore's Bell 412

Jordan Moore's Bell 412 is an old freeware FS9 model but a good FSX patch is available at Hovercontrol since sept 2011 and fixes most port-over issues (but not the usual "cloud" bug). Anyway, it is still the best chopper VC I've seen, and the offshore version with inflatable floats is really cool (use the "tail hook" key to inflate). Lotsa liveries too (the Bell 212 liveries are compatible with the 412...).

RCS North American B-25J alive and kicking

Another classic, the RCS North American B-25J, created by Brian Withers, Steve Wayne and Roy Chaffin of RCS Panels (www.roychaffin.com). Roy made a wonderful FS9 to FSX conversion recently (not native, but almost as good).

View attachment 57570

The only thing I don't like is the cumbersome gauge registration process. It works, but it's a pain... So I tweaked the panel to use the XML gauges from the FS9 Mike Stone B-25J (www.pmstone.com) and with default FSX DC-3 gauges as well. With XML gauges, no need to register anything. Of course, now it's not as nice as Roy's, but it was for me the only way to fly this aircraft without getting frustrated! And of course I've made a 16:9 panel to fit with laptop monitor...

View attachment 57571 View attachment 57573 View attachment 57572

Sorry to add some more controversy to the RCS B25 story, you know, the story about the repaint policy, the painful divorce with Maam Sim, etc... I won't publish this panel tweak, (unless Roy and Mike both say it's ok). I just wanted to give you some ideas, in case you have too much long winter evenings to fill ahead of you... And it's such a lovely plane! I hope RCS have new repaints and virtual cockpit updates coming soon!

what can I say...I love flying machines with steam gauges, round engines, and two wings...

Swingmans Duck is outstanding

B25J with SOH A26 xml gauges

Well it looks sure better with gauges from the SOH A26... Anybody interested? Won't publish anything until somebody (Roy, Steve of the A26 team) tells me it's ok...

View attachment 57943

Threre's some XML gauges from default Beaver and DC-3 too... So now no need to register the gauges like with the original one (even if Roy ported over his plane to FSX, his gauges are of the "gau" C++ type and need registering... and there's tons of them so it takes ages...).
